Position Overview

Layton Sports Cards is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Software Development Intern to join our Information Technology team for a temporary internship opportunity. This role offers hands-on experience working alongside an experienced software developer to build and support real-world applications designed to improve and streamline retail operations. The ideal candidate is passionate about software development, eager to learn modern technologies, and excited to contribute to meaningful projects in a fast-paced business environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Assist in building and maintaining full-stack application features using Node.js
  • Design, build, and consume GraphQL APIs to power dynamic front-end experiences
  • Write, optimize, and troubleshoot queries in a PostgreSQL database environment
  • Collaborate with developers and stakeholders on software design and architecture decisions
  • Participate in code reviews, daily standups, and sprint planning discussions
  • Support debugging, testing, documentation, and deployment processes
  • Help identify opportunities to improve internal systems, workflows, and automation
  • Follow development best practices, coding standards, and version control procedures
  • Develop intuitive dashboards, reporting tools, and data visualization features to support business decision-making

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
  • Working knowledge of software architecture and technology stack selection
  • Experience through coursework, projects, or internships using React and Node.js
  • Familiarity with GraphQL, including querying APIs and/or schema development
  • Basic understanding of relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL
  • Experience using Git in collaborative development environments
  • Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills
  • Self-motivated with a strong willingness to learn and adapt

  • Understanding of REST vs. GraphQL architecture and trade-offs

  • Prior experience building dashboards, reporting tools, or internal business software
