What is a frontend developer?

Frontend Developers are professionals who design and build the user-facing parts of websites and web applications. They use technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create interactive and visually appealing interfaces that users interact with directly in their browsers. Frontend Developers work closely with designers and backend developers to ensure a seamless and responsive user experience across different devices and platforms. Their role often includes optimizing website performance, ensuring accessibility, and maintaining code quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a frontend developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Frontend Developer, you need a solid grasp of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks like React or Angular, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), responsive design tools, and web performance optimization techniques is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong problem-solving abilities help you build intuitive, user-friendly interfaces and collaborate effectively with design and backend teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality, interactive web applications that meet user and business needs.

How do frontend developers collaborate with designers and backend teams during a project?

Frontend Developers regularly work closely with UX/UI designers to ensure that visual elements are accurately translated into interactive web pages and applications. They also coordinate with backend developers to integrate APIs and manage data flow between the server and the user interface. Regular meetings, code reviews, and collaborative tools like version control systems help streamline communication and maintain consistency across the project. This teamwork is essential to deliver a cohesive and high-performing end product.

Job description

The opportunity

This is a unique opportunity for a Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer to join the business at an early stage of its US growth and play a key role in shaping local and global project delivery.

In this role, you will work across the full Instrumentation & Controls lifecycle; from front-end engineering and detailed design through to commissioning and site execution, on technically complex projects for mining, mineral processing, and heavy industrial clients.

You will take a leading role in the delivery of I&C solutions, providing technical direction and contributing to key design decisions. You will collaborate closely with experienced engineers across Mipacโ€™s global offices and support the development of less experienced engineers within the team.

This role offers exposure to large-scale projects delivered internationally and includes opportunities to work directly with clients. Depending on project needs, the role may over time include travel to site locations in North America and internationally.

Your responsibilities

As part of a multidisciplinary project delivery team, you will:

  • Lead the design and implementation of instrumentation and control systems across complex projects.
  • Take ownership of key I&C deliverables and ensure quality, consistency, and alignment with project requirements.
  • Develop and review P&IDs, control philosophies, and functional descriptions.
  • Oversee the preparation of I&C deliverables, including:
  • I/O lists and signal schedules
  • Instrument datasheets and specifications
  • Loop diagrams and wiring details
  • Functional descriptions and control narratives
  • Alarm registers and cause & effect matrices
  • FAT, SAT, and commissioning documentation
  • Provide technical leadership in PLC and SCADA system design, configuration, and testing.
  • Lead or play a key role in FAT, SAT, and commissioning activities, including troubleshooting complex system issues.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers, providing guidance and technical review.
  • Work closely with process, electrical, and mechanical disciplines to drive integrated solutions.
  • Engage directly with clients and contribute to technical discussions and decisionโ€‘making.
What we are looking for
  • Extensive experience working in a projectโ€‘based engineering environment, such as an EPC, system integrator, or ownerโ€‘operator.
  • Strong handsโ€‘on experience with PLC programming and industrial control systems.
  • Experience leading I&C design and delivery across complex projects.
  • Proven ability to take ownership of deliverables and provide technical direction within project teams.
  • Experience mentoring or guiding less experienced engineers.
  • Strong understanding of instrumentation fundamentals and control systems.
  • Experience with SCADA/HMI development (e.g., FactoryTalk, DeltaV Live, or similar).
  • Demonstrated experience in commissioning and troubleshooting in live environments.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage with clients and lead technical discussions.

Preferred (but not required):

  • Experience in mining, mineral processing, heavy industry, or similar processโ€‘based environments.
  • Familiarity with multiple PLC/DCS platforms (e.g. Rockwell, DeltaV and/or Siemens).
