What is a frontend backend developer?

Frontend Backend Developers, often referred to as Full Stack Developers, are professionals skilled in both the client-side (frontend) and server-side (backend) aspects of web development. They design and build user interfaces, ensuring a seamless and interactive experience for users, while also managing server logic, databases, and application integration. Their broad range of expertise allows them to work on multiple layers of a web application, bridging the gap between visual design and technical functionality. This versatility makes them valuable in creating fully functional and cohesive digital products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a frontend backend developer?

To thrive as a Frontend Backend Developer, you need strong proficiency in web programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML, CSS for frontend, and Node.js, Python, or Java for backend), as well as a solid understanding of software development principles. Familiarity with frameworks (like React, Angular, or Vue for frontend and Express, Django, or Spring for backend), version control systems (like Git), and relevant certifications such as AWS Certified Developer can be highly beneficial. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help you effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and address complex technical challenges. These combined skills ensure you can build, optimize, and maintain robust, scalable web applications that meet user and business needs.

How do frontend backend developers typically collaborate with designers and other developers in a project team?

Frontend Backend Developers often work closely with UI/UX designers to implement visually appealing and user-friendly interfaces based on design specifications. They also collaborate with backend specialists to ensure seamless integration between the client and server sides, often participating in code reviews and joint problem-solving sessions. Regular communication and agile methodologies, such as daily stand-ups and sprint planning, help coordinate tasks and ensure project goals are met efficiently. This collaborative environment allows developers to learn from each other and contribute to both the visual and functional aspects of web applications.

What is the difference between Frontend Backend Developer vs Web Developer?

AspectFrontend Backend DeveloperWeb Developer
Primary FocusClient-side interface and user experienceOverall website development, including both frontend and backend
Skills & TechnologiesHTML, CSS, JavaScript, UI/UX designHTML, CSS, JavaScript, server-side languages, databases
Work EnvironmentDesign and implement user interfaces, collaborate with designersBuild complete websites, integrate frontend with backend systems
CredentialsWeb development certifications, coding bootcampsSimilar certifications, broader skill set

While both roles involve web development, a Frontend Backend Developer specializes in either the client-side or server-side aspects, whereas a Web Developer often handles both areas to create complete websites.

Is a front-end backend developer a good career or backend developer?

A frontend backend developer is a role that combines skills in both client-side and server-side development, often requiring knowledge of programming languages like JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and backend frameworks. It can be a good career choice due to high demand for full-stack skills, competitive salaries, and opportunities to work on diverse projects. However, it requires continuous learning and proficiency in multiple technologies to stay current in the field.

What does a frontend and backend developer do?

A frontend developer designs and implements the visual elements of a website or application that users interact with, using languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. A backend developer builds and maintains the server-side logic, databases, and APIs that support the frontend, often working with languages like Python, Java, or PHP. Both roles require collaboration and knowledge of development tools and frameworks to create functional, user-friendly digital products.

Job description

Staff Software Engineer (Product)

We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer (Product) to help shape the technical evolution of our product. This is a senior individual contributor role focused on building high-quality product systems, making sound technical decisions, and supporting other engineers through collaboration and example.

This role is hands-on and does not involve people management. You'll work closely with engineers, Product, and Design to deliver meaningful customer value while keeping an eye on long-term maintainability and quality.

What You'll Do

  • Design and build complex, customer-facing product features and systems
  • Take ownership of technical decisions within a product area or initiative
  • Work closely with Product and Design to shape practical, scalable solutions
  • Contribute to architectural discussions and technical direction across teams
  • Maintain a high bar for code quality through reviews and shared standards
  • Support and mentor other engineers through collaboration and knowledge sharing
  • Participate in production support and help resolve incidents when needed

What We're Looking For

We're looking for an experienced engineer who is comfortable working with autonomy, navigating ambiguity, and influencing outcomes through clear thinking and collaboration.

  • Strong experience building and maintaining production software
  • Experience designing and delivering complex systems or features end to end
  • Solid background in modern web application development
  • Experience with TypeScript and React, or similar modern frontend technologies
  • Backend experience with Node.js and/or .NET (C#)
  • Experience working in a cloud environment (Azure preferred, but not required)
  • Familiarity with API design, data modelling, and system boundaries
  • Clear communication skills and a thoughtful, collaborative approach

We don't expect deep expertise in every area. Strength in some areas and working knowledge in others is absolutely fine.

Technical Environment (High Level)

You'll work across much of our stack, with flexibility to lean into your strengths.

  • Frontend: React, TypeScript, modern UI patterns
  • Backend: Node.js and/or .NET services
  • Data: Relational databases (e.g. Postgres, Azure SQL, or similar)
  • Cloud: Microsoft Azure and standard cloud tooling

Experience with infrastructure as code, performance optimisation, or AI-enabled features is a plus, but not required

Nice to Have

  • Experience in B2B SaaS or complex product environments
  • Exposure to regulated, security-conscious, or enterprise systems
  • Experience contributing to cross-team technical initiatives
  • Interest in mentoring and supporting other engineers

Final Note

We value good judgment, pragmatic engineering, and collaboration over exhaustive checklists. If this role sounds broadly aligned with your experience, we'd be happy to hear from you-even if you don't meet every requirement.
