Safe Harbor Front Street Shipyard is seeking a Technician (Mechanic) specializing in diagnostic troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, and general repairs for outboard motors. The shop is an authorized Mercury dealership with a high volume of Yamaha and miscellaneous other brands. Position focuses on high-turnover service and diagnostics.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Inspect, maintain, and repair boats of all kinds
- Utilize diagnostic equipment to test and repair boat engines, hulls, propellers, rigging, masts, sails, and navigational equipment
- Install and test sanitation and refrigeration systems, cabinetry, electrical systems, steering gear, and accessories
- Troubleshoot, test, repair, replace, remove and install vessel systems and components
- Conduct thorough assessment prior to starting a job including; acknowledging the budgeted time and time
- frame for completion, proving the system and the element requiring service, sourcing parts if required
- Overall knowledge of marine systems including electrical, plumbing & water systems
- Troubleshoot, repair, and install vessel systems and components including but not limited to: electrical, electronics, HVAC, plumbing & water systems (fresh, salt, and waste), gas and diesel engines
- Assign parts and purchases to the appropriate vessels/tickets
- Must possess own tools
- Availability to work overtime in order to meet deadlines
- Other duties as assigned by Manager
Safety and Environmental Responsibilities
- Follow SHM Safety and Environmental rules and complete required related training.
- Wear proper personal protective equipment (may include safety glasses, gloves, life jackets and/or hard hats) as required for the task or work area.
- Report all accidents, injuries, spills and near misses immediately.
Technical and Physical Requirements
- Must possess a valid driver's license for conducting sea trials and maneuvering trailers
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Technical school training preferred
- Mercury Marine or Yamaha factory training is highly preferred
- 2-3 years' of hands-on experience as an outboard or marine technician preferred
- ABYC certifications preferred
- Ability to ascend and descend a ladder
- Complete inventory of personal hand tools and basic air/electric tools preferred
- Ability to work in confined spaces
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- Ability to work in outdoor marina environment
- Basic boat handling skills preferred
- Experience with both gas and diesel engines preferred
- Proficient with Mercury G3/CDS and Yamaha YCD diagnostic software is a plus
- Ability to troubleshoot 12V DC systems, wiring harnesses, cranking circuits, and charging systems preferred
- Experience servicing electronic fuel injection (EFI), carburetors, fuel pumps, and vapor separators preferred
- Skilled in water pump replacement, gearcase pressure testing, reseals, and propshaft inspections preferred
- Expert in 20/100/300-hour services etc. preferred
- Competent in mechanical/digital shift installations, steering systems (hydraulic/cable), and gauge setups preferred
- Ability to navigate dealership parts portals, look up service bulletins, and accurately log parts and labor on electronic service tickets preferred
- Any skills considered standard that a Technician should possess
