What is a front end web designer?

A front-end web designer uses coding and frameworks to develop user interfaces on a website. All the images and text layout you see when using a web page, such as drop-down menus, fonts, buttons, and transitions, are created by front-end web designers. They often take the blueprints made by a web designer and utilize coding languages to turn those plans into a visually attractive web page. To pursue a career as a front-end designer, you need an associate or bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. You must be knowledgeable in a variety of coding languages and frameworks, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or jQuery.

What are some common challenges front end web designers face when collaborating with back-end developers?

Front End Web Designers often encounter challenges when aligning design intentions with technical limitations imposed by the back-end infrastructure. Effective communication is key, as designers need to ensure that their visual concepts are feasible within the constraints of the chosen frameworks or content management systems. Additionally, differences in timelines and priorities can require flexibility and proactive problem-solving. Collaboration tools, shared documentation, and regular meetings can help bridge gaps and create a more seamless workflow between design and development teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a front end web designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Front End Web Designer, you need a solid grasp of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and responsive design principles, often supported by a degree or certification in web design or a related field. Familiarity with design tools like Adobe Creative Suite or Figma, as well as experience with frameworks such as React or Vue.js, is also important. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help set outstanding designers apart. These skills are essential for creating visually appealing, user-friendly websites that effectively communicate brand messages and meet user needs.

What is the difference between Front End Web Designer vs Web Developer?

Job description

About the role

  • Lead the design and experience for all of Hex’s web surfaces, including our website, documentation site, and any future experience or surface

  • Design and implement high-quality, production-ready front-end code (React/Next.js, CSS), owning experiences from concept through shipped UI

  • Own launch assets alongside marketing, ensuring every major product moment is visually clear, compelling, and on-brand

  • Establish and maintain visual quality, patterns, and consistency across all web experiences

  • Partner closely with designers and marketers to bring stories to life with clarity, craft, and narrative cohesion

  • Drive the long-term web roadmap, identifying opportunities for performance, clarity, storytelling, and experimentation

  • Collaborate with engineering partners while directly contributing front-end code to ensure high-quality implementation

  • Support product illustrations and light motion, bringing delight and personality to key moments

  • Over time, hire, manage, and mentor a team of engineers and designers

  • Influence processes, standards, and creative culture of the Design team

About you

You might be a great fit if you:

  • Have 8+ years of experience in web/visual/UI design with a portfolio demonstrating world-class craft, storytelling, and systems thinking

  • Are strong across UX, layout, visual design, and typography

  • Have experience designing marketing surfaces for technical, B2B, or product-led companies

  • Are fluent in front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, React/Next.js) and can ship production-quality code

  • Care deeply about implementation details and don’t rely solely on handoff to bring designs to life

  • Have a sharp eye for visual consistency, motion, micro-interaction quality, and illustration

  • Can operate autonomously with a bias toward velocity, owning projects from concept to launch

  • Are excited to establish processes, patterns, and design rituals for a growing team

  • Communicate design decisions clearly, with humility and cross-functional fluency

  • Enjoy both high-level creative direction and hands-on execution

  • Are energized by a mix of campaign work, long-term system building, and ongoing iteration of a high-traffic website

In addition to our unique culture, Hex proudly offers a competitive total rewards package, including but not limited to, market-benched salary & equity, comprehensive health benefits, and flexible paid time off.
