Front End Developer Designer information

What is a front end developer designer?

Front End Developer Designers are professionals who specialize in creating the visual and interactive aspects of websites and web applications. They combine skills in web design and front-end development, using tools like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and design software to build user-friendly interfaces. Their role bridges the gap between design and technology, ensuring websites not only look appealing but also function smoothly for users. They often collaborate closely with UX/UI designers, back-end developers, and other team members to deliver seamless digital experiences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a front end developer designer?

To thrive as a Front End Developer Designer, you need expertise in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and a strong understanding of UI/UX principles, often supported by a degree in computer science, web design, or related fields. Familiarity with front-end frameworks (like React or Vue), design tools (such as Figma or Adobe XD), and version control systems (like Git) is typically expected. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with teams and translate user needs into engaging interfaces. These skills ensure the delivery of visually appealing, user-friendly, and responsive web experiences that meet both business and user requirements.

How do front end developer designers typically collaborate with UX/UI teams and back-end developers?

Front End Developer Designers often serve as a bridge between creative design and technical implementation. They collaborate closely with UX/UI teams to translate wireframes, mockups, and user flows into interactive, visually consistent web interfaces. At the same time, they work with back-end developers to ensure seamless integration of APIs and data, addressing any technical constraints or challenges. Regular communication and participation in agile sprints are common, helping to align design vision with functional requirements and deliver a cohesive user experience.

Job description

Front-End Dev Expert

Position will lead the effort in bringing both high fidelity/low fidelity mockups to production through standards compliant/semantic code. We are looking for a Front-End Dev expert. As such, expert skills in HTML 5, CSS 3, WAI-ARIA & JavaScript are a must.

The State of Michigan is looking to build best of class user experiences across its multiple departments and platforms. This position will lead the effort in bringing both high fidelity and low fidelity mockups to production through standards compliant, semantic code. This position requires an expert level understanding of HTML and CSS and possesses the ability to build reusable and extendable components. All projects will require adherence to both State of Michigan look and feel standards as well as meet the Federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines.

Responsibilities will include translation of the UI/UX design wireframes to actual code that will produce visual elements of the application. You will work with the UI/UX designer and bridge the gap between graphical design and technical implementation, taking an active role on both sides and defining how the application looks as well as how it works. This position can work directly with clients and must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Experience implementing website designs that adhere to usability best practices and Americans with Disabilities (ADA) guidelines is required. Each site is designed to meet the specific business needs of a state agency, while adhering to enterprise-wide eMichigan standards for looks and feel, usability, and accessibility.
