A Front End Architect is responsible for designing and implementing the technical structure of web applications, focusing on the front-end. They establish coding standards, optimize performance, and ensure scalability. They collaborate with designers, developers, and stakeholders to create a seamless user experience. This role requires deep expertise in JavaScript frameworks, UI/UX principles, and front-end tooling.

What is the highest paid architect job?

The highest paid roles for front end architects typically include senior or lead positions in large organizations, with salaries reaching over $150,000 annually. Factors such as experience, expertise in frameworks like React or Angular, and certifications can influence compensation levels.

What does a frontend architect do?

A frontend architect designs and oversees the development of the user interface and client-side architecture of web applications. They establish coding standards, select frameworks and tools, and ensure the performance, scalability, and maintainability of the front-end code. Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and related frameworks is essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Front End Architect position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Front End Architect, you need deep expertise in JavaScript frameworks (like React, Angular, or Vue), web performance optimization, responsive design, and architecture best practices, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools such as Webpack, Babel, RESTful APIs, version control systems (like Git), and cloud platforms is highly valued, and certifications in modern front-end technologies can enhance your profile. Strong leadership, effective communication, and problem-solving skills distinguish outstanding candidates in this role. These abilities are critical for designing robust, scalable front-end solutions, guiding teams, and ensuring seamless collaboration with stakeholders across projects.

How to become a front-end architect?

To become a front-end architect, one should gain extensive experience in front-end development, including proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks like React or Angular. Developing strong skills in software design, architecture, and user experience, along with understanding backend integration and performance optimization, is essential. Earning relevant certifications and staying updated with industry trends can also support career advancement into this senior role.

What are some typical responsibilities of a Front End Architect on a development team?

Front End Architects are responsible for designing and implementing the overall structure and strategy of client-side applications, ensuring scalability and maintainability. They set coding standards, review code for quality, mentor front-end developers, and collaborate closely with UX/UI designers and back-end teams to align on project goals. Daily activities often include developing prototypes, evaluating new technologies, and troubleshooting complex issues across the front-end stack. By playing a key role in technical decision-making and team leadership, Front End Architects help drive the project’s success and foster best practices across the organization.

Will AI replace frontend devs?

Front End Architects and frontend developers focus on designing and implementing user interfaces, and while AI tools can assist with code generation and automation, they are unlikely to fully replace skilled developers. Human expertise is essential for creative problem-solving, user experience design, and adapting to project-specific needs. AI can augment frontend work but does not eliminate the need for technical knowledge and strategic planning in frontend development.

Job description

Description
About Xe
Xe is a cross-border payments platform. We help SMEs and consumers in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand collect, convert, hold, and send money across markets. Each year, over 300 million people use Xe for currency information and over 350,000 use us to send money overseas.
Today, we're rebuilding the platform layer behind cross-border payments for corporate and consumer clients. We're small enough that your code ships fast and your decisions matter, and Euronet Worldwide (Nasdaq: EEFT) backs us so the problems stay real-scale.
About This Role
We're hiring a Senior Architect who owns architectural problems end-to-end and shapes how the engineering org builds, from system design and component contracts through implementation, reliability, and the patterns that make the next surface cheaper to build. You already use AI as part of how you think, design, build, and ship.
You'll design the systems behind the surfaces consumers and SMEs use to move money in production, set the front-end architecture and patterns the engineering org adopts, and stay hands-on where it matters most. The work spans the web and mobile platform, the design system and shared component libraries, and the BFF and edge patterns that connect the front-end to the services behind it. You set front-end architecture direction across the engineering org, lead cross-cutting decisions, and mentor mid-level engineers and team leads.
What You'll Do
  • Own the front-end architecture across the engineering org: the web and mobile platform, the design system and shared component libraries, state and data-fetching patterns, and the BFF and edge layers that connect to the services behind them.
  • Stay hands-on: lead prototyping of patterns that engineers adopt, write code in the hardest parts of the front-end platform, and lead front-end architecture reviews across squads.
  • Set front-end architecture standards across the engineering org: component APIs, accessibility, performance, observability, and the patterns that keep the front-end consistent across products.
  • Lead cross-cutting front-end decisions, mentor mid-level engineers and team leads, and grow the front-end architecture practice across the engineering org.
  • Lead how the engineering org adopts AI in front-end work: use agentic coding tools (Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, or equivalent) daily across the SDLC, and shape AI use across design, code, testing, and documentation.
What We're Looking For
Must-have
  • 7 to 10+ years building production software end-to-end, with at least 3 years in architecture-leaning work such as front-end platform, system design, or technical leadership.
  • Track record designing and setting front-end architecture across multiple teams or the engineering org, including leading architecture reviews and mentoring engineers and team leads.
  • Strong front-end proficiency in TypeScript with Vue, React, or equivalent, our core front-end stack, with hands-on coding still part of daily work.
  • Solid CS fundamentals: object-oriented design, domain-driven design, data structures, and pragmatic system design.
  • Deep understanding of front-end architecture: component systems, state management, data fetching, and BFF or edge patterns.
  • Strong grasp of web performance, accessibility, and how front-end systems consume APIs and services.
  • Production experience with AWS, including CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions or equivalent).
  • Payments, FX, or regulated-industry experience.
  • Daily use of agentic coding tools (Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, or equivalent) across the SDLC, with a clear point of view on how AI fits into front-end architecture work.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain architectural tradeoffs to engineering, product, and business audiences.

Nice-to-have
  • Experience owning a design system or shared component libraries at scale.
  • Familiarity with our C# / .NET backend stack and how the front-end integrates with the services behind it.
  • Familiarity with TOGAF, SAFe, or other architectural frameworks.
  • Experience hiring, interviewing, or onboarding engineers and architects.
  • Experience leading large-scale platform migrations or architecture transitions.
Perks & Benefits
  • Medical, Dental & Vision Insurance
  • 401K Plan with Match
  • Employee Stock Purchase Plan
  • Paid Vacation / Sick Leave
  • Hybrid Work Schedule
  • Tuition Assistance
  • Growth Opportunities
  • Corporate gatherings & team bonding events
  • Plumm Mental Health and Wellbeing
  • Volunteering day for a charity of your choice
