Job Summary:
Los Alamos National Laboratory is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. They are seeking a Deputy Group Leader to provide leadership and technical oversight for the Computational Intelligence & Modeling Group, facilitating programmatic execution and fostering a culture of innovation and continuous learning among staff.
Responsibilities:
• Provide oversight, support, and coordination of work by ensuring safety and security of the workforce.
• Increase the impact of A-1 by leading and/or partnering to advance the development and broad utilization of complex research solutions across the Division and Laboratory.
• Enhance the competitive position of Group capabilities, including by helping shape A-1's evolving short- and long-term strategies.
• Identify, manage, and mitigate technical and organizational risk and enable timely/accurate delivery of high-quality technical products.
• Work with the A Division Leadership Team, Laboratory program offices, and key stakeholders to develop, plan, and execute innovative projects and programs to enable/build collaborations.
• Lead and mentor staff and take the initiative in strategic workforce development, succession planning, recruiting, retention, ethical and respectful work environment, and diversity of employees.
• Assist in performance and salary management of staff, strategic workforce planning, providing growth and development opportunities, and recognizing individual and team accomplishments.
• Identify facility needs and technology investments required to promote operational and technological sustainment for the Group.
• Assist in managing A-1's internal budgets supporting research, development, and Group operations.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in one or more of A-1's core R&D capability areas: statistical methods for advanced data science, artificial intelligence, large language models, machine learning, network/graph analysis, numerical optimization, stochastic modeling, uncertainty quantification, computational fluid dynamics, partial differential equations, multi-modal data fusion, software engineering, and systems administration.
• Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in one or more of A-1's core mission areas: multi-modal intelligence and predictive analytics; critical infrastructure security and reliability; complex system vulnerability analysis including critical infrastructure, earth systems and human systems; plume dispersion modeling; wildfire modeling; decision support for emergency response; modeling for strategic deterrence.
• Demonstrated working knowledge of U.S. priorities with respect to national and global security.
• Proven ability to motivate and lead a team with diverse skillsets and expertise through a complex technical risk landscape such as situations with competing or conflicting priorities or within highly constrained funding and schedules.
• Demonstrated ability to drive a creative, entrepreneurial R&D work environment in which innovation and continuous learning are essential for solving some of the most difficult challenges in science, engineering, and national security.
• Demonstrated passion for and record of continuous personal learning and professional growth.
• Ability to support the A-1 Group Leader by supporting Group members, working with Laboratory organizations that collaborate with A-1, interfacing with Laboratory leadership, and interacting with external sponsors and visitors.
• Demonstrated experience in all aspects of project management of technical or operational work to include budget preparation and oversight.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated record in developing collaborations, promoting teamwork, building consensus, and communicating effectively with staff, sponsors, and stakeholders.
• Strong interpersonal skills when working with supervisees and internal and external customers.
• Ability and desire to obtain Q/SCI clearance/access, which requires U.S. citizenship.
• Position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Preferred:
• Experience working with some of A-1's customers and partners (e.g., U.S. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration, Department of War, Department of Homeland Security, Intelligence Community, Defense Threat Reduction Agency, etc.).
• Active Q/SCI clearance/access.
• Experience conducting and/or overseeing classified work performed in SCIFs, vaults, vault type rooms (VTRs), and/or other classified areas.
• Prior record of program development, development of proposals, marketing of capabilities, and growth of customer relationships.
• Prior experience supervising and leading multidisciplinary teams of individuals with diverse backgrounds.
• An advanced STEM degree.
