Job description

Science Teacher

Reports To: School Principal

Department: Science

Grade Level: 6–8

Classification: Full-Time, Exempt

Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the Science Teacher develops students' scientific literacy, curiosity, and analytical thinking across the physical, life, and earth sciences. The teacher guides students in grades 6–8 through inquiry-based exploration, hands-on investigation, and the application of the scientific method — building the foundational knowledge and skills that prepare students for rigorous coursework in the sciences and for understanding the natural world.

Science Teacher Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Develops, plans, and delivers strong Tier 1 science instruction aligned with the Indiana Academic Standards (IAS) for Science, including the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)-aligned disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts across grades 6–8.
  • Provides instruction in the IAS-aligned content strands: Physical Science (forces and motion, energy, waves, matter and its interactions), Life Science (ecosystems, heredity, biological evolution, structure and function), and Earth and Space Science (Earth's systems, Earth's history, Earth's place in the universe, weather and climate).
  • Designs and facilitates inquiry-based and hands-on learning experiences that engage students in asking questions, planning investigations, analyzing data, and constructing evidence-based explanations.
  • Creates a safe, inclusive, and student-centered classroom and laboratory environment that supports individualized and small-group instruction and student-led inquiry.
  • Implements engineering design challenges and STEM integration activities that connect scientific concepts to real-world problem-solving contexts.
  • Differentiates instruction to meet the needs of all learners, including students with IEPs, English Language Learners, and advanced learners.
  • Conducts ongoing formative and summative assessments; uses data to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Maintains familiarity with Indiana state standardized assessments (ILEARN) and adapts curriculum to support student achievement.
  • Communicates regularly and effectively with students, families, and colleagues regarding student progress and classroom expectations.
  • Maintains accurate, complete records of student attendance, grades, and learning activities in compliance with district and state requirements.
  • Collaborates with grade-level teams, interventionists, and special education staff to support student learning across disciplines.
  • Manages laboratory materials, safety protocols, equipment, and technology tools in alignment with school and district safety standards.
  • Participates in professional development, faculty meetings, and school improvement initiatives.
  • Upholds school and district behavioral standards and fosters a respectful, curious, and inquiry-driven classroom culture.

Additional Duties
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal or designee in support of the school's educational mission.

Science Teacher Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong content knowledge across grades 6–8 science, including physical, life, and earth and space sciences, aligned to Indiana Academic Standards.
  • Experience with inquiry-based and phenomenon-driven science instruction preferred.
  • Knowledge of current science pedagogy, including the three-dimensional learning framework of the NGSS (disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts).
  • Understanding of differentiated instruction and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).
  • Ability to use student assessment data to drive instructional decision-making.
  • Proficiency with educational technology, digital simulations, and learning management systems.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Knowledge of applicable Indiana and federal education laws and regulations, including laboratory safety requirements.

Science Teacher Qualifications
  • Indiana Teaching License with endorsement in Middle School Science (grades 5–9) is required.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Education or a science-related field is required.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Prior successful teaching experience at the elementary or middle school level preferred.
  • Demonstrated record of improving student achievement outcomes preferred.
