Job Duties

Responsibilities
Patient care responsibilities are delivered with a knowledge of patient growth and development and are appropriate to the ages of the patients served.

COMMUNICATION
Acts as receptionist on the unit, receiving all incoming phone calls, greeting and directing visitors/patients.

Assures prompt and courteous communication between all departments by scheduling tests promptly, returning telephone calls quickly, and taking and forwarding messages accurately.

Answers intercom promptly to ascertain patient’s needs and notifies appropriate personnel to ensure immediate response/assistance.

Answers routine questions from patients and visitors on hospital policy.

Answers/screens telephone calls in a professional manner stating name and unit.

CHARTS
Assembles patient charts, checking that all required forms are addressographed, present and replenished as needed. Splits/disassembles patient’s chart as per policy.

Makes clerical entries on patients' clinical records (e.g., enters TPR data onto graph in patient's chart).

Prepares requests for patient procedures/tests; labels specimens and transports as necessary; transcribes lab work from doctor's order sheet onto laboratory test requisition forms and patient
Kardex.

Obtains old chart from Record Room as necessary.

Transcribes physicians’ orders to patient MAR (Medication Administration Record).

ADMISSIONS/TRANSFERS/EXPIRATIONS
Notifies the appropriate personnel (e.g., physician, nurses on the unit, dietary staff) in a timely manner of new admissions/transfers/expirations.

Maintains accurate identification of all patients on unit by making daily rounds and checking that all patients are wearing correct wrist identification bands and that door and bed labels are accurate.

Enters admission, transfers and expirations in logbook and on appropriate interdepartmental communication forms.

MISCELLANEOUS RESPONSIBILITIES
Makes discharge and transfer arrangements for patients (e.g., appointments, special diets).

Ensures patient property is safeguarded as per policy/procedure.

Removes Pharmacy copy of physician orders from the chart and places it in the pharmacy bin.

Prepares and maintains adequate supply of forms for patients' records.

Prepares requisitions for supplies and stores items in designated area.

Orients new ward clerks.

Sorts and distributes mail on the unit.

Prepares unit payroll and communicates changes to the Payroll Department.

Communicates effectively with oncoming Ward Clerk (shift-to-shift report).

Customer Service: respect, flexibility, knowledge, confidence, professionalism, pleasant attitude, patience and helpfulness. All responses should be timely, professional, caring, and respectful in accordance with Customer Service Performance expectations

Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. Assesses gaps in policies and procedures, and create necessary policies and procedures to fulfill these gaps.

Understands and adheres to the Medical Center’s Code of Conduct.

Familiar with the Medical Center’s Mission, Vision, and Values Statements.


Other Duties
Maintains statistical data as directed.
Effectively utilizes the hospital computer system as it pertains to job responsibilities and in accordance with hospital policy.
Participates on unit committees and in CQI activities as assigned.
Assists other personnel as necessary.
Runs errands in emergencies and/or as necessary.
Performs other duties as assigned to support the overall objectives of the department and organization.
Attends monthly unit meetings.

Position Qualifications
BLS certification required.
Medical terminology required.
Good, comfortable working knowledge of the computer.
Good oral and written communication skills.
Good interpersonal skills.
Speaks, reads and writes English to the extent required by the position.

Education
High school graduation or equivalent required.

Job Setting/Physical Demands
Patient care units; contact with patients, visitors, staff.
Mainly sedentary with occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching.
Mobility required.
Protective clothing may be required: gloves.

Salary commensurate with experience within posted range

$19.17/Hour
