Job description

We are hiring for a full-time Dispatch Supervisor to join the Transportation department at Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Second Harvest implements sustainable solutions to food insecurity through a strategically selected network of more than 600 partners across 46 counties in Middle and West Tennessee. What you’ll do: The Dispatch Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that transportation operates smoothly and efficiently. The Dispatch Supervisor oversees tasks that range from coordinating delivery schedules to managing driver pick up routes and ensuring compliance of various safety and DOT regulations. The Dispatch Supervisor must be detail-oriented with strong management skills, excellent communication skills, and have a depth of experience in the transportation industry. A successful Dispatch Supervisor is extremely organized, enjoys working in a fast-paced, dynamic communicative environment, and is a team player. Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborates with food sourcing, warehouse, donors when directing drivers to ensure effective execution of grocery rescue and donation pick-ups to maximize food resources for the organization. Utilizing transportation software and scheduling for optimization and ongoing improvement for routing.
  • Collaborates with community impact team, agency partners and operations team when directing drivers throughout the delivery process.
  • Collaborate with inventory control, volunteer engagement, Project Preserve and others to facilitate effective and efficient inventory transfers and shuttles between food bank sites.
  • Ensure adherence to and execution of established food bank safety policies and procedures, OSHA, Fleet Safety DOT Program, ensuring the number one priority is safety when delegating or operating any equipment at SHFB.
  • Establish and execute independently incident management process as required by transportation group (i.e. intendent reporting, towing, HAZMAT response, etc.).
  • Conducts ride-along will all drivers, coaching on process, efficiencies, and safety compliance. Collaborates with Director of Transportation on findings.
  • Collaborates with the Fleet Maintenance Coordinator and Transportation Specialist to achieve DOT maintenance and document compliance on all equipment at SHFB.
  • Partners with transportation specialist and others within the organization to effectively gather and report transportation related performance and cost data
  • Manages departmental KPIs to ensure on-time delivery and performance goals are met. Communicates insights and opportunities to Director of Transportation.
  • Partner with Fleet Maintenance Coordinator and strategic maintenance suppliers on Second Harvest’s commercial equipment and passengers’ vehicles. May be asked to shuttle equipment to vendor or driver if applicable.
  • Training drivers to ensure food safety compliance.
  • Builds strong and trusting relationships with team members and business partners; works collaboratively and cross-functionally to achieve objectives; and communicates with energy and positivity to motivate, influence, and inspire commitment and action.
  • Assists in seeking and implementing continuous improvements and encourages the team to leverage new digital tools and ways of working.
  • Assists in conducting Driver Evaluations, Quarterly Drivers’ Meetings, and any other Operational Process Meetings.
  • Assists Fleet Maintenance Coordinator and Director of Transportation in evaluating the purchase, lease, and trade of equipment.
  • Collaborates with Director of Transportation on preparations for upcoming Audits.
  • Works closely with Food Resource Team and maintain good relationships with donors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Yes, directly supervises a team of non-CDL, CDL-C/B and transportation coordinator and support staff.

When amp; Where:
SCHEDULE
  • Monday – Friday, 5:00 am – 1:00 pm.
  • Occasional evenings and/ or weekends may be required for meetings or special events.
  • Occasional duties may be necessary to respond to issues, outside of normal working hours (e.g., disaster response, community events, etc).
TRAVEL
  • Occasional daytime travel needed, up to 50% of work week within the local service area.
  • If possessing a CDL-A driver’s license, a copy of current auto insurance and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) results are required.

In instances of a federal, state or locally declared emergency, Second Harvest is typically considered an essential business service and emergency responder. All employees may have to perform regular or emergent duties on-site. Employee safety will be balanced with business and community necessity. Some positions are more likely to be required on-site than others. This position is considered part of the essential crew and is required to be on-site or off-site performing essential duties. Therefore, this position is not eligible for Remote or telecommuting portion of WorkFlex.

Is this you?

Education: Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, Logistics, or related field preferred.
Experience: 3+ years of related experience and/or training preferred.

Skills amp; Capabilities:
  • Licensed Class A CDL preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience as Class A CDL Driver preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in logistics, supply chain, business, or related field.
  • 5+ years of related experience and/ or management training required. Experience with GPS tracking and Trimble routing software preferred.
