Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Division of Student Affairs fosters student growth and development as well as aids, directs, and informs students about services and programs that will expand students' educational experiences and prepare them for diverse lives in local and global communities. The Division of Student Affairs is responsible for many of the outside-the-classroom/off-campus aspects of student life at ECSU, including student engagement and leadership; career services; student disability services; residential life; student activities; special programs and services; student health and counseling services.
Viking CARES is a unit of Student Counseling Services, a department within the Division of Student Affairs at Elizabeth City State University. The director is seeking to fill the position of CRC Coordinator to join an exciting team of professionals dedicated to helping the development of college students in recovery and education in the campus community. This position is responsible for providing substance and alcohol use prevention counseling to students enrolled at Elizabeth City State who are self-referred and conduct-referred. The CRC Coordinator will host as needed and facilitate outreach programs on campus or virtually.
Description of Work
This position is a grant-funded, temporary, full-time (40 hrs.) position in the Viking CARES/CRC Center, which reports directly to the Director of Counseling. Due to the temporary nature of this position, it does not include a benefits package (July 1, 2026- June 30, 2027).
Job Description
  • Primarily responsible for performing administrative duties, including the day-to-day operations of Viking CARES
  • Facilitate substance and alcohol use assessments, provide short-term education and awareness (refer to community if long-term services are needed), and group counseling for substance and alcohol use concerns and other personal, social, emotional, and vocational concerns
  • Assisting with counseling students in need of mental health services (if applicable)
  • Create and facilitate psychoeducational workshops/presentations that will address students' needs, such as substance and alcohol use and behavioral addictions
  • Conduct client assessments of personal and vocational characteristics for the purpose of assisting client decision-making and problem-solving strategies
  • Facilitate prevention programs and trainings related to substance and alcohol use and behavioral addictions across the campus
  • Provide crisis intervention and management, including on-call rotation (if applicable)
  • Provide student advocacy, particularly with reference to referrals to various community agencies or to other departments within the university.
  • Manage Peer Wellness Ambassadors to assist with departmental programming

Decisions of the Counseling Center staff are governed by the ethics and standards of the professional practice boards, North Carolina state licensing requirements, Elizabeth City State University policies, and the Counseling Center's policies and procedures.
Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position
Master's degree in Counseling, Substance Abuse Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, and/or related human science field. Candidates with a master's degree in a related human science field require 1 year of substance abuse experience.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
  • Master's degree required in mental health counseling, substance abuse, clinical psychology, or social work, from an accredited counseling/social work/psychology program is preferred; or a bachelor's degree mental health counseling, substance abuse, clinical psychology, or social work, from an accredited counseling/social work/psychology program and three years of experience working in alcohol/substance use prevention.
  • Eligibility for licensure in the state of North Carolina or Virginia as a mental health and/or addiction specialist (Full or provisional).
  • Experience working in a collegiate recovery community and college students or working with individuals battling substances and behavioral addictions.

Management Preferences
At least two years of post-master's clinical experience working in a college setting or mental health facility/community mental health, which can include a practicum or internship.
