Job description


The 5-Axis CNC Machinist is responsible for independently setting up and operating HAAS UMC-1000 5-axis machining center. This role requires proficiency in interpreting engineering blueprints, performing in-process self-inspections, and utilizing CAD/CAM systems to support efficient and accurate machining. The machinist is expected to contribute to continuous improvement efforts and uphold high standards of safety, quality, and productivity. The ability to set-up and operate both conventional and CNC lathes and mills to produce precision components is an asset
Responsibilities
  • Independently set up 5-Axis HAAS UMC-1000, including fixture installation and tool selection.
  • Optimize machining parameters and make program edits directly at the machine.
  • Produce high-quality parts within defined timeframes and tolerances
  • Accurately read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and GD&T requirements.
  • Translate design intent into effective machining strategies.
  • Utilize Mastercam or equivalent CAM software to generate and modify CNC programs.
  • Collaborate with management and engineering to improve manufacturability and reduce cycle times.
  • Design and fabricate custom fixtures and tooling to support complex machining operations.
  • Recommend tooling improvements to enhance process stability and repeatability.
  • Perform dimensional inspections using micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and other precision instruments.
  • Document self-inspection results and proactively address non-conformances.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and minor repairs on machining equipment.
  • Report equipment issues promptly and support root cause analysis for recurring problems.
  • Safely operate overhead cranes, gantries, and forklifts to move materials and components.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and contribute to a culture of safety and accountability.
  • Provide guidance and training to entry-level machinists.
  • Share best practices and support cross-functional problem-solving initiatives.

Qualifications
REQUIRED
  • High school diploma or equivalent, or one to three years formal training (vocation or technical school),
  • Five years previous experience in a machine shop with CNC machine operation. At least one year of 5-Axis machine set-up, programming, and operation experience.
  • Strong familiarity with Machine Shop Safety and OSHA requirements.
  • Ability to program, set up, and operate all conventional and CNC lathes and mills.
  • Advanced knowledge of CNC machining principles and conventional machining techniques.
  • High proficiency in blueprint reading and machining techniques.
  • Proficiency in Mastercam or similar CAM software.
  • Strong understanding of precision measurement and inspection methods.
  • Ability to troubleshoot machining issues and propose corrective actions.

DESIRED
  • Own basic machinist's tools for machine setup and inspection.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
