Job Description:

The Medical Assistant (MA) - Oncology Nurse Navigation Support partners with Nurse Navigators to facilitate timely, coordinated, and patient-centered cancer care. This role provides clinical, administrative, and coordination support to patients throughout the cancer care continuum with a focus on diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. The MA serves as a key liaison between patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team to reduce barriers to care and enhance the overall patient experience. This position reports to the Regional Nurse Manager.

Desired/Required/Qualifications

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED required
  • Graduate of accredited Medical Assistant program
  • Certification (CMA, CCMA, RMA) or certification eligible, preferred

Experience:

  • Two years of work experience in similar job or work environment, oncology and nurse navigation preferred
  • Familiarity with oncology workflows and terminology
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR)

Skills:

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
  • Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, emotionally complex oncology environment

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist Nurse Navigators in coordinating diagnostic testing, consultations, treatment appointments (chemotherapy, radiation, surgery) and follow up visits.
  • Track patients through established care pathways, ensuring timely progression from diagnosis to treatment.
  • Conduct patient outreach related to appointments, missed visits, and care plan follow-up.
  • Identify and communicate barriers to care, including transportation, insurance, scheduling, psychosocial concerns to the Nurse Navigator.
  • Perform and support clerical and administrative duties to ensure efficient navigation workflows, including answering and routing phone calls, scheduling and confirming appointments, managing referral/records requests, preparing patient packets, scanning/faxing documents, and maintaining accuracy of tasks and inbox activities in the EMR.
  • Functions as a team member by expanding responsibilities as directed by management to facilitate optional workflow within the cancer center.
