Job description

Position Purpose

The Accountant upholds the Credit Union’s mission of “We do the right thing one member, one employee, and one experience at a time to strengthen the communities we serve” by supporting the accurate and timely execution of the Credit Union’s accounting functions. This position performs a variety of accounting responsibilities, including balancing, tracking, analyzing, reconciling, financial reporting, general ledger and correspondent account balancing, fixed asset accounting, prepaid and accrual tracking, and assisting other departments. The Accountant often takes the lead on projects, assumes ownership of assigned accounting functions, and serves as a role model and resource for employees within the accounting department and across the organization.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Prepare, review, and reconcile assigned general ledger accounts to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with established accounting practices.
  • Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, including journal entries, accruals, account analysis, and supporting schedules.
  • Support preparation and analysis of internal financial statements, NCUA Call Report, Board of Directors reporting materials, management reports, and other regulatory reporting as needed.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and support for all assigned reconciliations, journal entries, and financial transactions.
  • Assist with accounting for investments, fixed assets, prepaid expenses, accruals, loans, deposits, accounts payable, or other operational areas as assigned.
  • Assist with payroll preparation, payroll-related reconciliations, and related accounting entries to ensure accurate and timely processing.
  • Prepare and support required tax reporting, filings, and related documentation in compliance with applicable federal, state, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support internal and external audits by preparing schedules, providing documentation, and responding to audit inquiries.
  • Ensure compliance with credit union policies, accounting procedures, GAAP, NCUA requirements, and applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Partner with departments across the organization to research accounting questions, resolve discrepancies, and improve financial processes.
  • Participate in system implementations, process improvements, automation initiatives, and accounting department projects.
  • Train, mentor, and support accounting team members by sharing knowledge, reviewing procedures, and assisting with departmental cross-training initiatives.
  • Assist with maintaining strong internal controls and identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Perform other accounting-related duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Works closely with other departments on various monthly processes.

 

Necessary Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, or related field is required, or three to five years of previous work experience in accounting or financial institution.
  • Familiarity with credit union or banking operations, including loans, deposits, investments, and regulatory reporting, preferred.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles (GAAP), financial reporting, and general ledger processes.
  • Ability to analyze financial information, identify variances, and resolve discrepancies.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal teams and maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Copilot
  • DNA and Prologue experience preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Office environment with moderate level of noise
  • Frequent use of telephone, copier, computer, fax machine and other office machines
