What is French proofreading?

A French Proofreading job involves reviewing and correcting written content in French to ensure accuracy, clarity, and proper grammar. Proofreaders check for spelling, punctuation, syntax, and formatting errors while maintaining consistency in style and tone. This role is crucial for ensuring high-quality content in various industries, including publishing, marketing, and translation services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a French proofreader?

To thrive in French Proofreading, a deep mastery of French grammar, spelling, and style along with a degree in French, linguistics, or a related field is essential. Familiarity with editing and proofreading software such as Microsoft Word's track changes, Adobe Acrobat, and specialized tools like Antidote is commonly required. Attention to detail, time management, and clear communication are important soft skills for success in this role. These skills and qualities are essential to ensure high linguistic accuracy, meet tight deadlines, and collaborate effectively with writers and editors.

What are the typical challenges faced by French proofreaders, and how can they overcome them?

French Proofreaders often encounter challenges such as identifying nuanced language errors, adapting to different writing styles, and working under tight deadlines. To overcome these, proofreaders must maintain up-to-date knowledge of language usage and consistently apply best practices for organization and focus. Collaborating with writers and editors, asking clarifying questions when needed, and using advanced proofreading tools can also help improve accuracy and efficiency. Developing a routine for reviewing documents and staying current with style guides are valuable strategies for excelling in this role.

About the role

Are you a French-first language expert and a wordsmith with marketing knowledge? Are you passionate about communication, detail, and delivering exceptional brand engagement experiences?

We're looking for a highly skilled French proofreader to ensure our French-language communications are accurate, market relevant, brand-aligned, and compliant. This position plays a critical role in helping us connect with advisors, clients, partners, and employees across Quebec and French-speaking markets.

What you'll do

French language review and quality assurance

  • Proofread, edit, and quality-check French translations and adapted content across multiple communication channels
  • Compare translated French content against source English copy to ensure accuracy, intent and readability are preserved
  • Ensure content is grammatically correct, market and culturally appropriate, and aligned with Quebec French language standards
  • Verify terminology, messaging, and consistency across campaigns, publications, and marketing materials
  • Identify and resolve inconsistencies in language, tone, formatting, and branding
  • Occasional translation of English content into French

Marketing and communications support

  • Review advisor-facing and company-facing communications, including (but not limited to):
  • Email communications
  • Marketing campaigns
  • Digital advertisements
  • Websites and landing pages
  • Social media content
  • Brochures and guides
  • Event materials
  • Presentations and speaker notes

  • Provide recommendations to improve readability, clarity, and cultural relevance for French-speaking audiences

Project coordination

  • Collaborate with translation vendors, designers, content creators, and internal stakeholders
  • Track revisions and ensure updates are accurately implemented
  • Help prioritize work to support multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
  • Participate in campaign planning discussions and provide French-language guidance early in the creative process

French language and cultural expertise

  • Act as a trusted resource on French-language communications and Quebec market considerations
  • Advise teams on terminology, tone, and cultural nuances
  • Support the development of French taglines, campaign themes, and brand messaging
  • Contribute to the maintenance of French style guides, terminology databases, and language standards

What you bring

  • Post-secondary degree in Translation, French Language, Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field
  • Minimum of five years of experience in French proofreading, editing, translation, or language quality assurance
  • Experience reviewing marketing, digital, or corporate communications is considered a strong asset
  • Experience in financial services, insurance, wealth management, or a regulated industry is an asset
  • Bilingualism (fluent in French and English) required, as the position will regularly serve our clients with English and French-speaking need
  • Exceptional written French with expert-level grammar, spelling, punctuation, and editing skills. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete a French-language proofreading and editing assessment to demonstrate their ability to review, refine, and adapt content for French-speaking audiences
  • Strong English written and verbal comprehension and ability to assess translation accuracy
  • Knowledge of Quebec French linguistic conventions and cultural nuances
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and tight deadlines
  • Strong collaboration and stakeholder-management skills
  • Experience using Microsoft 365 applications and digital collaboration tools
