Job description

St. Luke's School, a secular (non-religious), college-preparatory day school serving grades 5 through 12 in New Canaan, Connecticut, seeks a part-time French teacher to teach 2 sections of high school French. A successful candidate will join a team that includes 6 Spanish teachers, 3 French teachers, and 3 Mandarin teachers. The WL program is known regionally and nationally for its innovations, use of cutting-edge technology, and total immersion modern language classes. Since 2015, the St. Luke's French program is the only school in the USA to have been consistently awarded the status of "AATF Exemplary French Program with Distinction": the highest rank of French programs nationally.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
  • Teach part-time course load of 2 sections of high school French, most likely French II/Honors French II
  • Attend monthly Department meetings and occasional other required meetings in person or via Zoom.
  • Make arrangements to provide extra help for students as needed.

Schedule
This position is suited to a teacher seeking the flexibility of a part-time schedule. SLS follows a rotating 6-day schedule, so there is no such thing as a "Monday schedule"; rather there is a Day 1 schedule, a Day 2 schedule, and so forth. SLS Upper School classes meet 4 times per six day cycle; classes are 60 minutes long. In addition, part-time teachers can expect to provide about 2 hours of extra help in total to students each week, on average. Preparation for classes and grading student work may all be completed at home; part-time employees only have to be on campus to teach their classes and occasionally attend faculty meetings. New employees attend a week-long orientation in August, prior to the start of school.
Key Skills and Qualities:
  • Fluency in French
  • Desire and ability to build authentic relationships with students
  • Ability to teach rich content with creative pedagogy
  • Superb oral and written communication skills
  • Flexibility and strong organizational skills
  • Confidence using educational technology
  • Excellent time management
  • Capacity to develop students' critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Strong cultural competency skills, with demonstrated commitment to furthering an equitable and inclusive school community

Compensation
  • Not benefit-eligible due to part time status
  • Salary $30,000-$40,000, based on years of experience
