Job description

Overview

The Gateway Manager is responsible for managing the operational and strategic activities of gateway facilities, ensuring seamless import and export operations. This role requires expertise in air, and land freight forwarding processes, regulatory compliance, and supply chain coordination. The Gateway Manager will drive efficiency, local procurement, maintain high service standards, and support business growth by managing key operations, collaborating with stakeholders, and leading a skilled team.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee daily import/export operations across air, and ground freight gateways.
  • Ensure timely clearance and movement of shipments, optimizing routing to meet customer delivery deadlines.
  • Coordinate freight consolidation, deconsolidation, and cargo handling to maximize efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Lead and manage gateway staff, including warehouse and administrative teams, to achieve operational targets.
  • Conduct training programs to ensure staff competency in freight forwarding processes and systems.
  • Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to evaluate and enhance team performance.
  • Ensure compliance with international trade regulations, including customs procedures, export controls, and documentation requirements.
  • Manage relationships with customs brokers, airlines, ground handlers (CFS), shipping lines, and other regulatory bodies.
  • Stay updated on industry regulations, ensuring the gateway's operations align with legal and ethical standards.
  • Collaborate with internal departments (sales, customer service, operations) to align service delivery with client needs.
  • Build strong relationships with carriers, agents, and third-party logistics providers to support efficient operations.
  • Act as the primary contact for escalations and problem resolution in gateway activities.
  • Analyze shipment data, cost metrics, and operational workflows to identify areas for improvement.
  • Prepare detailed operational reports for senior management, highlighting successes and recommending enhancements.
  • Conduct root cause analyses for delays or disruptions and implement preventive measures.
  • Streamline gateway workflows to improve speed, accuracy, and efficiency.
  • Implement technology solutions, such as transportation management systems (TMS) and electronic documentation, to enhance productivity.
  • Lead initiatives to reduce operational costs while maintaining high service quality.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in logistics, supply chain management, international trade, or a related field.
  • 8-10 years of experience in freight forwarding, with a minimum of 5 years in a managerial role.
  • Strong understanding of air and land freight forwarding processes, including customs clearance and documentation.
  • Proven ability to lead diverse teams in a high-pressure environment.
  • Proficiency in freight forwarding software (e.g., CargoWise, Descartes, or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Essential Job Functions
  • Certification in freight forwarding or supply chain management (e.g., FIATA, IATA, CSCMP, or similar).
  • Familiarity with electronic data interchange (EDI) systems and paperless logistics operations.
  • Experience with Lean, Six Sigma, or other process improvement methodologies.
  • Ability to work flexible hours to accommodate international time zones and 24/7 operations.
  • Occasional travel to other gateway locations or industry events as required.
  • Ability to work in an office environment majority of the time.
  • Complete and assist with the completion of assigned tasks/projects in a timely manner.
