What is freelance writing and editing?

Freelance writing and editing refers to providing writing, proofreading, and editing services to clients on a contract or project basis, rather than as a full-time employee. Freelance writers create content such as articles, blogs, marketing materials, or technical documents, while editors review and refine this content for clarity, grammar, and style. Freelancers have the flexibility to choose their clients and projects, set their own schedules, and often work remotely. This career path requires strong writing skills, attention to detail, and the ability to meet deadlines. Many freelancers build their reputation and client base through portfolios, networking, and online platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance writing editor?

To thrive as a Freelance Writing Editor, you need advanced writing, grammar, and editing skills, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), style guides such as AP or Chicago, and editing tools like Grammarly or Hemingway Editor is typically required. Strong time management, attention to detail, and effective client communication set successful editors apart. These skills ensure the delivery of polished, accurate content that meets client needs and industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance writing editors, and how can they overcome them?

Freelance writing editors often face challenges such as managing multiple client deadlines, maintaining consistent communication, and adapting to different writing styles or editorial guidelines. To overcome these hurdles, it's important to use reliable project management tools to track assignments and deadlines, establish clear expectations with clients upfront, and continually hone editing skills to remain adaptable. Building a strong professional network and seeking feedback can also help editors stay competitive and connected in the freelance market.

Writing editors can earn a wide range of salaries depending on experience, industry, and location, with many freelance editors earning between $25 and $75 per hour or more. Experienced editors with specialized skills or working for established clients tend to earn higher rates, and some may supplement income through multiple projects or ongoing contracts.

How much do freelance writing editors make?

Freelance writing editors typically earn between $20 and $50 per hour, depending on experience, specialization, and project complexity. Many also charge per word or per project, with rates varying widely based on skill level and client requirements.

Job description

Company Description

Wedding Weekender is redefining wedding videography by helping couples capture their wedding weekends in an authentic, affordable way. We rent camcorders for family and friends to film the weekendโ€”then our team organizes the footage and edits it into a wedding video that feels true and unique to each couple's celebrations.

We're a fast-growing, creative start-up building a scalable post-production team to deliver high-quality, on-brand wedding films at volume. Since our launch this year, we've been featured in the New York Times, Vogue Weddings, Martha Stewart Weddings, and more. We're looking for a highly organized, people-focused Editor Operations Manager to build the freelance editor team that brings every Wedding Weekender film to lifeโ€”recruiting top editing talent, training them to our creative standards, and driving the performance and quality that keep every film feeling personal and polished.

Role Description

This is a full-time role (remote-friendly) for an Editor Operations Manager at Wedding Weekender. You'll own the pipeline of freelance editors that power our post-production teamโ€”recruiting and onboarding new talent, managing performance, and building the systems that let our editor bench scale alongside the business.

You'll work closely with the Director of Post-Production and Post-Production Project Manager, translating creative quality standards into repeatable hiring, training, and coaching processes.

Key Responsibilities

Editor Recruitment

  • Source and recruit talented freelance wedding video editors
  • Review portfolios and conduct technical and creative evaluations
  • Coordinate paid test projects and provide hiring recommendations
  • Build and maintain a pipeline of qualified editors

Editor Training & Onboarding

  • Lead onboarding for newly hired editors
  • Train editors on Wedding Weekender's editing style, workflows, and expectations
  • Create and maintain training materials, SOPs, and reference examples
  • Answer editor questions and provide ongoing support throughout onboarding

Performance Management

  • Monitor editor KPIs of new editors, including:
  • On-time delivery
  • Revision rates
  • Quality review scores
  • Communication responsiveness
  • Identify coaching opportunities and create improvement plans
  • Recommend promotions, probation, or offboarding when appropriate

Creative Quality

  • Partner with the Post-Production Director and Post-Production Specialists to identify recurring quality issues
  • Turn common feedback into scalable training resources
  • Ensure creative standards remain consistent across the editor team
  • Help evolve editing guidelines as Wedding Weekender grows

Team Development

  • Foster strong relationships with freelance editors
  • Recognize high-performing editors and help them grow
  • Improve editor retention through coaching and support
  • Continuously refine hiring, onboarding, and training processes

Qualifications

  • Proven experience recruiting, interviewing, and hiring creative talent, preferably freelance video editors or other creative professionals
  • Experience onboarding, training, and coaching team members to meet quality and performance expectations
  • Strong ability to provide clear, actionable feedback that helps editors improve while maintaining positive working relationships
  • Experience tracking performance metrics and using data to identify coaching opportunities and measure success
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple editors and priorities simultaneously
  • Outstanding written communication skills and comfort working with a fully remote team
  • Strong understanding of storytelling, pacing, music selection, and emotional editing
  • Professional experience editing wedding films in Adobe Premiere Pro and working within Frame.io workflows
  • High attention to detail and a passion for creating scalable systems, documentation, and training resources
  • Self-motivated with a continuous improvement mindset and a desire to build exceptional creative teams
