The Kitchn is seeking an enthusiastic Assistant Culinary Producer that will help bring our recipes to life and keep the studio running smoothly. The Assistant Culinary Producer is critical in helping our recipes succeed by cross-testing recipes, styling on set, and supporting on shoots. This role will help prep for photo and video shoots (shopping, prepping, and cooking ingredients), and also execute their own shoots. The ideal candidate for this role must have experience cross-testing recipes and food styling for digital media. The Assistant Culinary Producer will work from our Manhattan studios and report to the Deputy Food Editor.
Responsibilities
Editorial
- Attend all edit meetings, including the team weekly
- Contribute ideas to team brainstorms and pitch sessions
- Test cookware for shopping stories
Recipes
- Cross-test 8 recipes per month for accuracy, troubleshooting as needed, and delivering thorough and useful feedback along with testing photos
Food Styling
- Style for weekly studio photo shoot: prep, cook, and style recipes, grocery products, and/or cookware as needed, working in close collaboration with staff photographer
- Proactively participate in preparing for studio photo and video shoots, working in close collaboration with the studio team: collaborate on shot lists, prepare for pre-production meetings, create grocery lists and run of shows, and source ingredients as needed
- Actively maintain a clean, organized, positive, and collaborative kitchen workspace during photo and video shoots
Studio Kitchen Organization
- Consistently maintain clean and organized workspaces, keeping kitchens stocked with essential supplies
- Own the organization and stocking of pantry inventory
- Oversee organization and upkeep of kitchen equipment, including sharpening knives, seasoning cookware, and oiling wood cutting boards
Culinary Assistance
- Assist Culinary Producers and freelance food stylists on recipe and food shoots, including photo and video
- Attend and participate in pre-production meetings, taking notes on grocery orders and styling preferences
- Oversee all grocery ordering, including online and hand-shopping as necessary, and receiving deliveries
- Prep ingredients and set a mise en place for photo and video shoots
- Clean workspaces and dishes, and discard or distribute any leftover ingredients and food at the end of shoot
- Return props and equipment to their designated location at the end of day
- Conduct a final walk-through of kitchen studios at the end of day
Experience & Skills
- 2+ years of cooking and baking experience
- 1+ years food styling experience in both sweet and savory
- Strong culinary foundation (formal culinary training is preferred)
- Top-notch organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work fast and efficiently in the kitchen and multitask
- Able to work well independently and stay on top of deadlines and shifting priorities
- Great problem solver, strong collaborator, and true team player who fosters a positive work environment
- Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills with attention to detail
Budgeted Salary: $70,000 annually
