Writing Center Coordinator
Job Location: On Campus
Position Summary
The Writing Center Coordinator provides leadership for Spalding University's Writing Center and promotes student success through comprehensive writing, reading, and literacy support services. The Coordinator oversees daily operations of the Writing Center, supervises and trains peer tutors and graduate assistants, develops academic support programming, and collaborates with faculty and campus partners to strengthen students' written communication, critical reading, and academic literacy skills.
The Coordinator serves a diverse student population, including undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students, through individual consultations, classroom instruction, workshops, and targeted academic support initiatives. This position plays a key role in advancing the University's commitment to student achievement, retention, and academic excellence.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Writing Center Leadership and Administration
  • Manage the daily operations of the Writing Center, both in-person and virtual.
  • Recruit, hire, supervise, train, and evaluate student writing tutors and graduate assistants.
  • Develop tutor training programs and ongoing professional development opportunities.
  • Collect, analyze, and report utilization data, learning outcomes, and program effectiveness measures.
  • Maintain and update Writing Center resources, instructional materials, website content, and promotional materials.
Student Support Services
  • Provide individual writing consultations for undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students.
  • Support students through all stages of the writing process, including brainstorming, organization, drafting, revision, source integration, citation, and editing strategies.
  • Provide individualized reading support focused on academic literacy, reading comprehension, critical reading, annotation strategies, vocabulary development, and discipline-specific reading skills.
  • Collaborate with faculty to integrate reading and writing support within undergraduate coursework.
Campus Outreach and Instruction
  • Partner with faculty to embed Writing Center services into courses through workshops, classroom visits, and targeted instructional support.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops on writing, reading, academic literacy, citation styles, graduate school preparation, and related topics.
  • Represent the Writing Center at university events, orientations, outreach programs, and academic success initiatives.
  • Coordinate special events and programs that celebrate student writing, literacy, and academic achievement.
Assessment and Continuous Improvement
  • Assess student needs and emerging trends in writing and literacy support.
  • Utilize data to improve Writing Center services and student learning outcomes.
  • Stay current with best practices in writing center administration, literacy development, tutoring, and student success initiatives.
Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree in English, Composition and Rhetoric, Education, Literacy Studies, Higher Education, or a related field.
  • Experience teaching, tutoring, coaching, or supporting students in writing and/or literacy development.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Strong organizational, project management, and data management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a student-centered environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a college or university writing center, tutoring center, learning center, or academic support program.
  • Experience supervising student employees or peer tutors.
  • Knowledge of writing center pedagogy, composition theory, academic literacy, and learning support practices.
  • Experience developing and delivering workshops, presentations, or classroom instruction.
  • Experience supporting diverse learners, including multilingual students and students with disabilities.

Work Environment
This position typically operates in both office and instructional environments and requires regular interaction with students, faculty, staff, and campus partners. Occasional evening events or workshops may be required.
