Freelance Telecom Structural Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Telecom Structural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Telecom Structural Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering, typically with a relevant degree and professional licensure (such as PE or SE). Proficiency in structural analysis software (like STAAD.Pro or SAP2000), AutoCAD, and familiarity with telecom industry standards is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are valuable soft skills for successful project delivery and client interactions. These competencies ensure safe, compliant, and cost-effective telecom infrastructure that meets client and regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges freelance telecom structural engineers face when managing multiple projects for different clients?

Freelance telecom structural engineers often juggle projects with varying scopes, timelines, and client expectations, which can lead to challenges in prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines. Coordinating with diverse teams—such as architects, construction crews, and telecom equipment vendors—requires strong communication and organizational skills. Additionally, freelancers must stay current with changing industry standards and local regulations for each project location. Effectively managing documentation, invoicing, and client relations is also crucial for maintaining a successful freelance practice.

What does a Freelance Telecom Structural Engineer do?

A Freelance Telecom Structural Engineer specializes in designing, analyzing, and evaluating the structural integrity of telecommunications infrastructure, such as cell towers, rooftop antennas, and supporting frameworks. They ensure that these structures meet safety codes, industry standards, and client requirements while accommodating new equipment or modifications. Working on a freelance basis, they handle project-based work for telecom companies, tower owners, or engineering firms, offering flexibility and expertise for both new builds and upgrades.

What is the difference between Freelance Telecom Structural Engineer vs Telecom Project Engineer?

AspectFreelance Telecom Structural EngineerTelecom Project Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications in structural or telecom engineeringEngineering degree, project management certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentIndependent, contract-based, on-site or remoteCompany-employed, on-site or office-based
Industry UsageDesign and analyze telecom structures, often freelance or consultingManage telecom projects, coordinate teams and resources

Freelance Telecom Structural Engineers focus on designing and analyzing telecom infrastructure structures independently, often working on a contract basis. Telecom Project Engineers oversee entire projects, managing teams and resources within a company. While both roles require engineering credentials, the freelance engineer emphasizes structural design, whereas the project engineer handles project execution and management.

Job description

Overview

MasTec Communications Group is a leading national infrastructure construction company operating throughout the United States. We provide wireless and wireline communication services at scale, including cell tower construction, RF engineering, broadband fiber optic cable installation, OSP engineering, wireline construction, and emergency maintenance services.

We are seeking a Director of Operations & Engineering to lead engineering delivery, team performance, and technical oversight across a multi-state telecom infrastructure environment. This role requires a strong people leader with deep telecom engineering credibility, multi-state engineering support experience, and the ability to drive accountability, workload execution, and operational consistency.

Responsibilities

Position Summary

The Director of Operations & Engineering will lead engineering teams responsible for structural and A&E support across wireless and related infrastructure programs. This individual will oversee staff performance, workload distribution, quality, production output, and engineering standards while partnering closely with operations, project management, and executive leadership.

This role is ideal for a leader who can balance technical authority, people leadership, and operational ownership in a fast-paced national environment.

This is a Director-level telecom structural engineering leadership role focused on multi-state PE oversight, team leadership, and EOR/stamp responsibility — not an OSP engineering or fiber design position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage engineering staff across structural, A&E, and related support functions
  • Drive team accountability, workload execution, and on-time delivery across multiple markets
  • Oversee engineering quality, technical consistency, and adherence to applicable codes, standards, and client requirements
  • Manage staffing plans, resource forecasting, and workload balancing across internal and external teams
  • Support hiring, mentoring, coaching, and performance management of engineers and related staff
  • Provide technical leadership in structural analysis, modification design, mount analysis, tower analysis, and related telecom infrastructure engineering activities
  • Partner with operations and project leadership to resolve project challenges, improve execution, and reduce delivery risk
  • Support proposal review, scope planning, and engineering input for new and existing business opportunities
  • Help expand and support growth initiatives, including emerging infrastructure sectors such as EV charging and related programs
  • Maintain strong collaboration with internal stakeholders, clients, and external engineering/vendor partners
  • Support multi-state engineering operations, including licensure planning and engineering sign/seal requirements where applicable

Qualifications

About You

  • 10+ years of engineering experience in telecom, wireless infrastructure, structural engineering, or related infrastructure environments
  • 5+ years of leadership experience managing engineering teams, production, and delivery
  • Strong experience in telecom structural engineering, including tower analysis, mount analysis, modification design, foundations, rooftop structures, and related systems
  • Experience leading engineering operations across multiple states or regions
  • Demonstrated ability to manage people, priorities, and performance in a deadline-driven environment
  • Strong background in quality review, engineering standards, and operational process improvement
  • Experience with resource planning, staffing, budgeting, forecasting, or utilization management preferred
  • Prior experience in wireless infrastructure, A&E, OSP, DAS, small cell, or related telecom programs strongly preferred
  • Exposure to EV charging, power, or adjacent infrastructure programs is a plus
  • Licenses / Technical Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required
  • Multi-state licensure strongly preferred
  • NCEES record or ability to obtain additional state licenses quickly preferred
  • Experience with tools such as tnxTower, RISA 3D, Enercalc, AutoCAD, or similar engineering platforms preferred
  • Familiarity with TIA, ANSI, IBC, AISC, and related industry standards preferred

What Success Looks Like

  • Leads a high-performing engineering team with strong accountability and responsiveness
  • Owns incoming work and supports business growth
  • Improves delivery consistency, communication, and execution across the department
  • Brings both technical credibility and real people leadership to the organization
