What does a freelance telecom structural engineer do?

A Freelance Telecom Structural Engineer specializes in designing, analyzing, and evaluating the structural integrity of telecommunications infrastructure, such as cell towers, rooftop antennas, and supporting frameworks. They ensure that these structures meet safety codes, industry standards, and client requirements while accommodating new equipment or modifications. Working on a freelance basis, they handle project-based work for telecom companies, tower owners, or engineering firms, offering flexibility and expertise for both new builds and upgrades.

What are some common challenges freelance telecom structural engineers face when managing multiple projects for different clients?

Freelance telecom structural engineers often juggle projects with varying scopes, timelines, and client expectations, which can lead to challenges in prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines. Coordinating with diverse teams—such as architects, construction crews, and telecom equipment vendors—requires strong communication and organizational skills. Additionally, freelancers must stay current with changing industry standards and local regulations for each project location. Effectively managing documentation, invoicing, and client relations is also crucial for maintaining a successful freelance practice.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance telecom structural engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Telecom Structural Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering, typically with a relevant degree and professional licensure (such as PE or SE). Proficiency in structural analysis software (like STAAD.Pro or SAP2000), AutoCAD, and familiarity with telecom industry standards is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are valuable soft skills for successful project delivery and client interactions. These competencies ensure safe, compliant, and cost-effective telecom infrastructure that meets client and regulatory requirements.

Job description

Interplan LLC is a commercial architectural and engineering firm with over 50 years of experience, specializing in the design of restaurants, retail, and commercial developments for nationwide clients. We seek an Electrical Engineering (SME) to elevate our MEP Department’s electrical deliverables through expert review, QC, redlining, and mentorship for internal design teams.
This role is pivotal in ensuring consistency, rigor, and technical excellence across electrical designs. The Electrical SME will act as a technical backstop — providing redline reviews, code guidance, and design oversight to support our engineers, designers, client managers, and Principals!

Responsibilities
  • Perform detailed quality control (QC) reviews of electrical drawings (single-line diagrams, panel schedules, lighting layouts, power distribution, raceway/conduit routing) for compliance, clarity, and constructability.
  • Provide redline markups and technical commentary to electrical designers and engineers to ensure alignment with design intentions and quality standards.
  • Review electrical calculations including voltage drop, short circuit, fault current, load analysis, coordination, grounding/earthing, harmonics, and arc flash where applicable.
  • Verify that electrical designs adhere to the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA standards, energy codes, and local jurisdictional amendments.
  • Review and validate design of lighting systems, power distribution (transformers, switchgear, panels, feeders), motor control (MCCs, VFDs), emergency/egress lighting, fire alarm systems, and low voltage systems (data, telecom, fire alarm, security) as needed.
  • Evaluate vendor submittals, material specifications, equipment schedules, and Bill of Materials (BOM) for compliance with design intent and standards.
  • Identify recurring design gaps or inefficiencies and propose process improvements, standard details, or templates to enhance consistency across projects.
  • Mentor junior electrical designers and engineers, review their work, and provide feedback and training in best practices, code interpretation, and standardization.
  • Collaborate with MEP leadership and cross-disciplinary teams (mechanical, plumbing, structural) to ensure coordinated integration of systems.
  • Participate in virtual design review sessions, technical check-ins, and issue resolution meetings with project teams.
  • Support construction phase review efforts (RFI reviews, as-built checks) as needed.
Qualifications & Prior Experience
  • 15+ years of professional experience in electrical engineering, including strong experience in commercial or commercial/industrial development.
  • Demonstrated expertise in electrical design review and quality control in building projects (restaurants, retail, institutional, etc.).
  • Deep working knowledge of NEC, NFPA, energy codes, and local electrical code amendments.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or Revit (or similar CAD/BIM tools) for electrical layouts, one-lines, and panels.
  • Experience with electrical analysis tools (e.g., ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, or equivalent) for load flow, short circuit, coordination, arc flash studies is a strong plus.
  • Solid experience designing or reviewing lighting systems, power distribution, motor controls, conduit & cable routing, grounding, and low voltage systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to explain design issues and redline feedback clearly and constructively.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred but not required, especially if the candidate has deep QC/review experience.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive compensation commensurate with expertise.
  • Continuing education, training, and professional growth opportunities.
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits.
  • Short-Term Disability; employer-paid Long-Term Disability and Life Insurance.
  • Flexible Spending & Dependent Care Accounts.
  • Employee Assistance Program and Health & Wellness support.
  • Paid Holidays and generous PTO.
  • 401(k) with employer match and financial wellness resources.
  • Performance-based bonus or incentive program.

Join our team of engineering leaders at Interplan and play a key role in elevating the technical quality and consistency of our electrical design deliverables across commercial development!
