Job description

CBS 62 (WWJ-TV) and CW50 (WKBD-TV), the CBS News and Stations owned & operated stations in the #15 television market of Detroit, are seeking a creative and dedicated Sports Reporter to join our growing CBS Detroit News Team. This freelance position offers the opportunity to work with a dynamic team committed to delivering exceptional sports coverage across multiple platforms.
Position Overview
We are looking for a versatile sports journalism professional with a strong commitment to visual storytelling, excellent photography and editing skills, and the ability to produce compelling daily content from the field. The ideal candidate will be equally comfortable anchoring in-studio, reporting remotely, and creating enterprise content that engages audiences across traditional and digital platforms.
Key Responsibilities
Content Creation & Production
  • Anchor sports segments and report remotely with professional excellence
  • Produce original enterprise content that stands out in the market
  • Shoot, edit, write, and produce entertaining and informational stories and sportscasts across multiple platforms
  • Create content that serves on-air, online, and streaming audiences
  • Develop and execute basic graphics to enhance storytelling

Editorial Contribution
  • Contribute to the editorial process with consistent, newsworthy story pitches
  • Maintain unwavering commitment to journalistic integrity and accuracy
  • Meet daily deadlines while delivering high-quality content

Digital & Social Media Engagement
  • Apply expert knowledge of social media platforms to connect with audiences and implement station strategy
  • Consistently supply compelling material to CBS News Detroit's social media and digital platforms
  • Adapt content for various digital formats and audiences

Required Qualifications
Professional Experience
  • Prior experience as a Sports Anchor/Reporter in a top 10 market preferred
  • Proven track record of dynamic storytelling and interviewing abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team setting within fast-paced environments

Technical Skills
  • Must be proficient in shooting, writing, editing, and creating basic graphics
  • Strong photography and editing capabilities
  • Experience with multi-platform content production

Knowledge & Expertise
  • Expert knowledge of professional, college, and high school sports
  • Deep understanding of sports journalism best practices
  • Applied knowledge and strategic use of social media platforms

Personal Attributes
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills
  • Proven ability to meet strict deadlines consistently
  • Willingness and availability to work independently on varying schedules including evenings, weekends, and holidays
