What is a freelance RF design engineer?

Freelance RF Design Engineers are independent professionals who specialize in designing, testing, and optimizing radio frequency (RF) circuits and systems for various applications, such as telecommunications, wireless networks, and broadcasting. Unlike salaried employees, they work on a contract or project basis for different clients, providing their expertise on-demand. Their responsibilities often include creating schematics, selecting components, running simulations, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Freelance RF Design Engineers need strong technical skills, up-to-date knowledge of RF technologies, and the ability to manage projects independently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance RF design engineer?

To thrive as a Freelance RF Design Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, RF circuit theory, and experience with wireless communication systems, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Proficiency with RF simulation and design tools like HFSS, ADS, or CST, as well as familiarity with PCB design software, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for successful project delivery and client interactions. These skills and qualifications are essential to design reliable RF systems, meet client specifications, and maintain competitiveness in a project-based environment.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance RF design engineers when working with multiple clients simultaneously?

Freelance RF Design Engineers often juggle projects for several clients at once, which can present challenges such as managing different project timelines, adapting to varied technical requirements, and ensuring clear communication across diverse teams. Balancing priorities and staying organized are crucial to delivering quality work within tight deadlines. Additionally, freelancers need to quickly familiarize themselves with each client's unique tools and processes, making adaptability and proactive problem-solving essential skills for success in this role.

What is the difference between Freelance Rf Design Engineer vs Rf Design Engineer?

AspectFreelance Rf Design EngineerRf Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically holds relevant engineering degrees, certifications optionalRequires engineering degree, often with industry certifications
Work EnvironmentIndependent, project-based, remote or on-siteFull-time, employed by a company, on-site or hybrid

Job description

Company Background

Specter's mission is to help automate the physical world.

Today, we build video sensors with state-of-the-art AI agents that answer any question, anywhere in their environments. Our systems can automatically detect and reason about any physical activity captured on camera, from security incidents (e.g. perimeter intrusion, theft, LPR), to safety monitoring (e.g. PPE detection, injured people), to operational efficiency (e.g. material tracking, congestion monitoring). We offer both long range wireless (1km range) and wired sensor variants to suit any deployment.

Our co-founders Xerxes and Philip are passionate about empowering our partners in the fast approaching world of physical AI and robotics. We are a small, fast growing team who hail from Anduril, Tesla, Uber, and the U.S. Special Forces.

The Role

Specter is hiring an Antenna and RF Hardware Design Engineer to own the antenna and RF hardware design that sets the ceiling on our deployment range, capacity, and sectorization geometry. This role takes antenna designs from EM simulation through fabrication, measurement, and production qualification, and supports the broader RF team on PCB-level matching, isolation, and layout decisions.

Responsibilities
  • Antenna design: Model patch, array, and air-gap antennas in HFSS or CST. Take designs from simulation through fabrication, measurement, and qualification.
  • RF front-end design: Design matching networks, harmonic filtering, and PA/LNA chains for sub-GHz and Wi-Fi radios.
  • Multi-radio integration: Integrate Wiโ€‘Fi, HaLow, and other radios on shared platforms. Own coexistence and isolation across coโ€‘located standards.
  • PCBโ€‘level RF design: Own RF schematic and layout decisions: stackโ€‘up, controlled impedance, RF routing, and isolation. Review PCB layouts with the EE team.
  • Measurement and bring-up: Characterize designs on VNA, run Sโ€‘parameter and radiation pattern measurements, and drive bringโ€‘up of new RF hardware.
  • Production qualification: Define acceptance criteria for RF designs and partner with the test team on qualification methodology.
  • Design and IP documentation: Maintain design files, measurement reports, and qualification artifacts.
Qualifications
  • 3โ€“5 years of RF hardware design experience on production wireless hardware.
  • Strong RF fundamentals: transmission lines, impedance matching, Sโ€‘parameters, signal integrity.
  • EM simulation: HFSS, CST, or equivalent.
  • Handsโ€‘on RF measurement: VNA, Sโ€‘parameter, and pattern or gain measurement.
  • PCBโ€‘level RF design experience: stackโ€‘up, controlled impedance, RF routing, isolation.
  • Subโ€‘GHz or ISM band experience (902โ€“928 MHz preferred).
  • Project ownership and timeline discipline, you flag risks early and deliver without being chased.
Nice to Have
  • Antenna design experience: patch, array, airโ€‘gap, or other constrainedโ€‘formโ€‘factor antennas.
  • Multiโ€‘radio platform integration and coexistence (Wiโ€‘Fi + subโ€‘GHz, Wiโ€‘Fi + cellular, or similar).
  • 802.11 standards knowledge, ideally including 802.11ah / Wiโ€‘Fi HaLow.
  • Anechoic chamber operations or nearโ€‘field scanning.
  • FCC Part 15 awareness as it relates to intentional radiators.
  • Altium or comparable PCB layout tool familiarity.
