As of May 31, 2026, the average yearly pay for full time rf design engineer in the United States is $117,680.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $97,500.00 and $139,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time RF Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time RF Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, RF circuit design, and signal processing, typically supported by a relevant degree. Experience with tools such as HFSS, ADS, MATLAB, and proficiency in simulation and PCB design software is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication make candidates stand out in this role. These skills ensure the successful development, optimization, and troubleshooting of RF systems critical to wireless communication technologies.

What are some common challenges faced by RF Design Engineers in a full-time role, and how can they be addressed?

Full-time RF Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing signal interference, ensuring regulatory compliance, and meeting strict performance specifications. Balancing cost, size, and power constraints while optimizing circuit and antenna performance can be demanding. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as hardware, software, and compliance engineers—is crucial for troubleshooting and validating designs. Staying up-to-date with the latest simulation tools and industry standards helps address these challenges and contributes to successful project outcomes.

What does a Full Time RF Design Engineer do?

A Full Time RF (Radio Frequency) Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing radio frequency circuits and systems used in wireless communication devices and networks. Their work involves creating schematics, simulating RF circuits, selecting components, and ensuring that designs meet regulatory and performance standards. They often collaborate with hardware and software teams to integrate RF solutions into products such as smartphones, satellites, and communication infrastructure. Additionally, RF Design Engineers troubleshoot and optimize existing designs to improve efficiency and reduce interference.

What is the difference between Full Time Rf Design Engineer vs RF Systems Engineer?

AspectFull Time Rf Design EngineerRF Systems Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning RF circuits and componentsIntegrating RF systems within larger communication systems
Required SkillsRF circuit design, simulation, testingRF system integration, system-level analysis
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, R&D departmentsSystems integration, field testing
CertificationsRF design certifications, EE degreeRF system certifications, EE degree

While both roles involve RF technology, the Full Time Rf Design Engineer primarily focuses on designing RF circuits and components, whereas the RF Systems Engineer concentrates on integrating RF systems into complete communication solutions. The roles often overlap but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Essential Functions
  • Design/develop moderately complex antennas (ex. single and dual band) for products derived primarily from existing products including simulations, prototyping and evaluation
  • Proficiently use one of the antenna simulation software (ex. XFDTD, CST, HFSS etc.)
  • Familiar with use of lab bench (ex. multimeters, network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, soldering iron, etc.)
  • Capable of running antenna chamber (passive and active measurements)
  • Knowledgeable of Garmin's internal/external radiated specifications and corresponding limits and guidelines from regulatory and standard bodies (ex. FCC, CTIA, 3gPP etc.)
  • Offer suggestions for antenna manufacturing process improvements
  • Review schematic/PCB layout for antenna contacts and corresponding matching circuits
  • Find root cause and suggest corrective action for given antenna problems
  • Work with the factory team to understand design impacts on manufacturability
  • Collaborate and add value through participation in design reviews, providing comments and suggestions on antenna and electrical engineering design aspects
  • Use good communication skills with Design team, mechanical engineers, leadership and all responsible parties
  • Apply a sense of urgency, commitment and focus on the right priorities in developing solutions in a timely fashion and participate in recruiting activities as assigned

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field AND a minimum of 2 years industry experience in antenna design for consumer electronics OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering with focus on antennas and electromagnetics or related field OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
  • Demonstrated ability with application of design standards and procedures to develop moderately complex antenna designs including simulations, prototyping and evaluation
  • Demonstrated ability with electrical engineering tools
  • Demonstrated knowledge of design impacts on manufacturability
