What is a freelance researcher?

Freelance researchers are independent professionals who conduct research on a contract or project basis, rather than being employed full-time by a single organization. They work across various industries, gathering, analyzing, and interpreting data to support clients’ projects or decision-making processes. Freelance researchers may work remotely or on-site, and their tasks can range from academic research and market analysis to background checks and report writing. They are responsible for managing their own schedules, finding clients, and delivering high-quality research within agreed deadlines.

What does a freelance researcher do?

As a freelance researcher, your responsibilities are to conduct research on a specific subject or topic, report to a project manager, other researchers, or directly to your client about the information you find, and help organize the research so other investigators or researchers can easily access and utilize the resources. Freelance researchers work in many industries, including news and media, marketing and advertising, entertainment, higher education, nonprofit and governmental organizations, and think tanks. Your specific duties may vary depending upon the industry in which you work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Researcher, you need strong analytical skills, subject-matter expertise, and experience in research methodologies, often supported by an advanced degree or relevant coursework. Familiarity with data analysis software, academic databases, and citation management tools is typically required. Excellent communication, time management, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for managing projects and delivering client-ready results. These skills ensure accurate, insightful research outputs and enable effective collaboration with diverse clients in a competitive freelance environment.

What are some common challenges freelance researchers face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Freelance researchers often juggle several projects for different clients at once, which can make time management and organization particularly challenging. Balancing varying deadlines, adapting to diverse research topics, and responding to different client expectations require strong planning and communication skills. Many professionals use project management tools and set clear milestones to keep work on track and ensure high-quality deliverables. Building a reliable routine and maintaining transparent communication with clients can help mitigate these challenges and lead to repeat business.

This role requires someone who is comfortable working directly within advertising platforms, analyzing campaign performance, and identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and scale growth.

The ideal candidate combines strong analytical thinking with operational campaign management experience and a deep understanding of performance marketing metrics such as customer acquisition cost (CAC), lifetime value (LTV), and return on ad spend (ROAS). This role plays a key part in driving customer growth by identifying, testing, and scaling the digital acquisition strategies that bring new customers to our platform.

  • Continuously test and refine campaign targeting, messaging, and creative formats to improve acquisition performance.
  • Analyze funnel performance and marketing metrics including CAC, LTV, conversion rates, and revenue attribution.
  • Identify and test new acquisition channels, platforms, and audience opportunities that can unlock incremental growth.
  • Monitor industry trends and platform updates to identify emerging advertising opportunities and competitive advantages.

Creative Development and Performance Testing

  • Develop a scalable creative testing engine that continuously generates and evaluates new ad concepts.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external freelancers to produce high-performing creative assets including ad copy, visual formats, and video content.
  • Develop performance-driven creative briefs informed by audience insights, campaign data, and competitive research.
  • Continuously test creative formats, messaging, and audience targeting to improve engagement and conversion performance.

Social Media and Lifecycle Marketing Leadership

  • Provide direction and support for lifecycle marketing and social media initiatives so they align with customer acquisition and growth priorities.
  • Work closely with the Lifecycle Marketing and Social Media Marketing Supervisor to ensure alignment between acquisition campaigns and ongoing customer engagement initiatives.

Measurement, Attribution and Reporting

  • Track marketing performance across the acquisition funnel including traffic quality, conversion rates, CAC, LTV, and ROAS.
  • Develop reporting frameworks that provide visibility into marketing performance and acquisition efficiency.
  • Evaluate channel effectiveness using attribution frameworks and incrementality testing to better understand acquisition impact.
  • Forecast marketing performance and model the relationship between marketing spend, acquisition costs, and revenue growth.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner closely with sales, product marketing and e-commerce to improve acquisition performance and customer conversion journeys.
  • Collaborate with e-commerce to identify opportunities to improve landing pages, user flows, and conversion experiences.
  • Partner with freelance creative teams to develop high-performing marketing assets and messaging across acquisition channels.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • 5+ years of experience in growth marketing, performance marketing, or digital acquisition roles with hands-on campaign management experience.
  • Proven experience managing paid media campaigns across platforms such as Google Ads, Meta, YouTube, and other digital advertising channels.
  • Experience managing and optimizing paid media budgets with accountability for performance metrics such as CAC and ROAS.
  • Strong understanding of performance marketing metrics including CAC, LTV, ROAS, and conversion rates.
  • Familiarity with CRM platforms used for segmentation, targeting, and lifecycle marketing programs.
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics CRM and Customer Insights Journey is considered a strong asset.
  • Experience collaborating with internal teams and freelance resources to develop and test digital marketing creative.
