What is a freelance photographer?

A freelance photographer is a self-employed professional who takes photographs on a project or contract basis, rather than working as a salaried employee for a single company. Freelance photographers can specialize in various fields such as portraits, events, commercial, or editorial photography. They are responsible for finding their own clients, managing their business operations, and delivering high-quality images according to client specifications. This career offers flexibility and creative freedom, but also requires strong business and marketing skills to succeed.

What are some common challenges freelance photographers face when managing multiple clients and projects?

Freelance photographers often juggle several clients and projects simultaneously, which can make time management and organization challenging. Meeting overlapping deadlines, handling post-production for multiple shoots, and ensuring clear communication with clients are frequent hurdles. Many photographers use scheduling tools and project management software to stay organized, and it's important to set clear expectations with clients regarding turnaround times and deliverables. Building a reliable workflow and maintaining strong client relationships can help streamline operations and reduce stress.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Photographer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Photographer, you need strong technical photography skills, creativity, a solid portfolio, and often some formal training or coursework. Familiarity with professional cameras, photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, and an understanding of lighting equipment are typically required. Excellent communication, time management, and self-marketing abilities help you stand out when dealing with clients and managing your business. These skills are crucial for producing high-quality work, attracting clients, and sustaining a successful freelance career.

Freelance Art Director

Kinn Studio

Los Angeles, CA โ€ข On-site

Part-time

Posted 3 days ago

Job description

Freelance Art Director - Part-time, Contract

About Kinn Kinn is a modern heirloom fine jewelry brand. For the past seven years we've brought storytelling and personal meaning back into the jewelry people wear every day โ€” celebrating a woman's many moments lived. We're a small, founder-led brand team that cares deeply about taste, craft, and how the brand shows up in the world.

The Roleย

We're looking for a freelance Art Director to join our Brand team on a part-time contract basis, starting as coverage during a team member's leave (roughly 1โ€“2 months).

This is a hybrid creative role. You'll lead art direction and on-set production for our campaigns and help shape how the brand comes alive on social. We're not looking for someone purely executional โ€” we want a creative partner who brings fully formed ideas, anticipates rather than waits to be briefed, and has a point of view on how brand translates into content.

You'll work closely with our Head of Brand and Founder, and ideally you're someone who's as comfortable directing a shoot as you are thinking about how that campaign lives across the grid.

What you'll do

Art Direction & Production

  • Concept and lead visual direction for campaigns, product launches, and digital activations
  • Build moodboards, references, shot lists, and visual treatments
  • Direct photo and video shoots on set โ€” lighting, composition, styling, props
  • Manage shoot logistics: call sheets, scheduling, file prep, vendor coordination
  • Guide post-production: selects, editing notes, pacing, and final visual polish

Social & Content Direction

  • Lead the creative direction of how the brand shows up on social
  • Help shape how campaigns are conceived for social โ€” not just adapted to it afterward
  • Partner with our social team to elevate content beyond "posting on the grid" into intentional, brand-right storytelling
  • Bring strategic input on how brand and social work together

You might be a fit if you

  • Have proven experience art-directing photo and video shoots, ideally in fashion, beauty, jewelry, or a premium lifestyle brand
  • Are genuinely passionate about social โ€” how brand comes alive there and how to art-direct properly across the channel
  • Bring strong taste and judgment, and can protect the brand while moving fast
  • Are a self-starter who sees around corners and creates momentum
  • Can be on set and in our office as needed

Details

  • Type: Freelance / Contract, part-time
  • Hours: ~20โ€“30 hours/week (flexes with production schedule)
  • Duration: ~1โ€“2 months coverage, with potential to extend
  • Location: Hybrid โ€” minimum 1โ€“2 days/week in office, plus on-set days as needed
  • Reporting to: Head of Brandย
  • Compensation: Commensurate with experience
