What is freelance mechanical engineering?

Freelance mechanical engineering involves working independently rather than as a full-time employee for one company. Freelance mechanical engineers take on projects for various clients, providing services such as product design, CAD modeling, prototyping, and engineering analysis. This career path offers flexibility in choosing projects and setting your own schedule, but it also requires strong self-management and business skills. Freelancers typically find work through online platforms, networking, or direct outreach to companies needing their expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance mechanical engineer?

To thrive as a Freelance Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, a relevant degree, and often a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Proficiency with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools, and project management platforms is typically required. Strong communication, time management, and client relationship skills help you stand out in this self-directed role. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality work, meeting client expectations, and successfully managing multiple projects independently.

What are some common challenges freelance mechanical engineers face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Freelance mechanical engineers often juggle several projects at once, which can create challenges related to time management, prioritization, and communication with multiple clients. Balancing deadlines and ensuring consistent quality across diverse projects requires strong organizational skills and the ability to set clear expectations with clients. Additionally, freelancers must independently handle administrative tasks such as invoicing, contracts, and sourcing new work, further increasing their workload. Successfully navigating these challenges can lead to greater autonomy and career growth in the field.

What is the difference between Freelance Mechanical Engineering vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectFreelance Mechanical EngineeringMechanical Design Engineer

Freelance Mechanical Engineering involves independent consulting and project work across multiple industries, offering flexibility and diverse projects. Mechanical Design Engineers usually work within organizations, focusing on designing and developing mechanical systems as part of a team. Both roles require engineering knowledge, but freelancing emphasizes independence, while design engineering emphasizes collaboration within a company.

How much do freelance mechanical engineers make?

Freelance mechanical engineers typically earn between $30 and $100 per hour, depending on experience, specialization, and project complexity. Annual income varies widely based on workload, with experienced professionals capable of earning six-figure sums through multiple projects and advanced skills in CAD software and prototyping.

Is it possible to work remotely as a freelance mechanical engineer?

Yes, freelance mechanical engineers can often work remotely, especially for tasks such as design, analysis, and consulting that rely on CAD software and communication tools. However, some projects requiring on-site testing, manufacturing, or equipment setup may necessitate physical presence. Remote work depends on client requirements, project scope, and the engineer's skills with digital collaboration tools.

VVater

Austin, TX โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 11 days ago

Job description

VVater is a US-based, next-generation water treatment company that aims to provide Water for All Humankind with a cornerstone of sustainability and a promise of a better, healthier tomorrow. Servicing various industries and markets around the world, including Real Estate & Aquatics, Municipal & Wastewater Treatment, Food & Beverage, and Oil & Gas, our focus is on recovering and recycling different waters in a centralized or distributed way. The company also provides recreational quality water for artificial beaches, urban lagoons, wave pools, and surf parks, as well as ultra-pure and potable water for a variety of uses.

The Municipal & Wastewater sector plays a vital role in maintaining public health and environmental sustainability. It involves the development and implementation of solutions for water treatment, waste management, and infrastructure development in municipalities. This dynamic sector demands innovation, strategic planning, and a commitment to creating sustainable solutions. As the VP of Sales, you will be at the forefront of navigating the Municipal & Wastewater market. Your strategic vision will be instrumental in identifying and capitalizing on business opportunities, fostering key relationships with municipal clients, and leading a high-performance sales team. With a focus on understanding municipal needs, regulatory requirements, and solution-based selling, you'll drive revenue growth and contribute to the continued success of VVater.
Reporting directly to the SVP of Sales, the VP of Sales - Municipal & Wastewater will own and drive all revenue growth across VVater's municipal and wastewater treatment verticals. This is a quota-carrying, player-coach role for a proven closer who can build a pipeline, navigate complex government procurement cycles, lead RFP responses, and establish VVater as the dominant name in advanced direct potable reuse and wastewater reclamation across the United States and internationally.

You will build the playbook, build the team, and build the revenue, in that order. If you thrive on complexity, are energized by long-cycle enterprise and government deals, and want to plant your flag on one of the most important industries of the next century, this is your seat.

At VVater, starting salaries are expressed as base salaries for sales roles. Additional compensation from sales commissions and short-term incentives are also part of the compensation package for a VP of Sales.

VP of Municipal & Wastewater Sales responsibilities are:

  • Exceeding monthly, quarterly, and annual sales targets
  • Implementing and executing strategic plans
  • Building and maintaining good customer relationships
  • Communicating effectively among clients and higher managers
  • Creating reports on sales performance
  • Understanding category-specific landscapes and trends
  • Extensive experience with the management of CRM-based software like Salesforce or Hubspot.
  • Establish sales objectives through forecasting in a sales process
  • Develop annual sales quotas for regions and territories
  • Implement national sales programs by developing field sales action plans and reviewing sales performance
  • Maintain sales volume, product mix, and selling price by keeping current with supply and demand, changing trends, economic indicators, and competitors.
  • Establish and adjust sales prices by monitoring costs, competitors, and supply-and-demand indicators.
  • Complete sales operation requirements by scheduling, assigning sales team members, and following up on work results.
  • Maintained national sales staff through regular recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training.
  • Employ assistance from sales-focused freelancers or consultants to ensure quotas are consistently met.
  • Recruiting and hiring sales staff and developing training programs.
  • Project expected sales volume and profit for new and existing products.
  • Working with the marketing department to design print and online promotional materials for the company's products and services.
  • Monitoring the market, competitor products, and activities, and providing detailed sales forecasting.
  • Creating sales reports and providing feedback to the leadership team at company meetings.

VP of Municipal & Wastewater Sales requirements are:

  • BA/BSc in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Marketing, Business, or related field / MA/MSc would be preferred
  • 10+ years of progressive B2B sales experience, with a minimum of 5 years selling into municipal water, wastewater, or environmental infrastructure markets
  • Demonstrated track record of closing complex, high-value contracts ($500K-$10M+) with government and municipal entities
  • Deep understanding of municipal procurement processes, including competitive bidding, sole-source justification, and public funding mechanisms
  • Experience navigating multi-stakeholder government sales cycles involving city councils, utility boards, engineering consultants, and legal teams
  • Prior experience in water treatment, environmental engineering, or clean technology sectors strongly preferred
  • Proven ability to recruit, lead, and scale a sales team in a high-growth or startup environment
  • Strong financial acumen - ability to build and present compelling ROI and life-cycle cost analyses for capital equipment and services
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; comfortable presenting to executive and elected audiences
  • CRM proficiency, ideally HubSpot; fluency in sales reporting and pipeline management
  • Bachelor's degree required; engineering background or technical water industry knowledge is a significant plus
  • Willingness to travel up to 50% - our clients are everywhere

The ideal candidate for this role is not just a sales professional; they are a mission-driven operator. They understand that water is not a commodity; it is a responsibility. They possess the tenacity to pursue long procurement cycles without losing momentum, the credibility to walk into a city council chamber and command the room, and the builder's instinct to create something that lasts.
