Job description

Position Summary

The Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA) is seeking an experienced Managing Editor for the historical, award-winning Alliance Life Magazine. Founded by A. B. Simpson in 1882, Alliance Life holds the distinction of being the longest-running denominational magazine in the United States. Over more than 140 years, it has fulfilled a singular purpose: encouraging a deepening faith journey with Jesus, reporting on the worldwide reach of the gospel through The Alliance, and helping readers discover their role in carrying out Christ's mission in their neighborhoods and among the nations. More than a publication, Alliance Life has served as the theological and formational heartbeat of the Alliance family, shaping the spiritual imagination of generations of pastors, missionaries, and lay leaders across the movement's global reach.

The Managing Editor for Alliance Life will provide strategic content development, curation, and management of the publication.

This is a full-time position located in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. This position works under the direction of the Director for Storytelling and is responsible for the editorial production and strategic development of this historical and formative magazine for The Christian and Missionary Alliance. This position sits within Story Team's purpose-driven framework, producing content designed to deepen understanding and formation—exploring theology, telling The Alliance's stories with editorial depth, and growing new audiences of the Alliance family in their faith and mission engagement. In the performance of these duties, this position will support the overall mission of the C&MA as described below.

Specific Duties

Digital Transformation & Production

  • Leads the strategic transition of Alliance Life from a traditional bi-monthly, magazine-only model to a digital-first, web-based content hub, developing workflows, publishing cadences, and editorial approaches suited to digital distribution while maintaining the quality and identity of the print edition
  • Manages the Alliance Life editorial calendar and production workflow in coordination with the Director for Storytelling, ensuring alignment with the broader Story Team communications calendar and Development objectives
  • Coordinates with the user experience functional team to optimize the Alliance Life digital platform experience and maintain circulation/engagement objectives through strategic distribution efforts

Editorial Leadership & Standards

  • Manages the editorial direction of Alliance Life for a digital-first web platform and print editions, ensuring that editorial and graphic content meet high editorial, design, and production quality standards
  • Coordinates with the Editor in Chief and the Director for Storytelling's narrative vision while bringing specialized editorial and production expertise to Alliance Life's digital transformation
  • Coordinates the writing, refining, editing, and proofreading processes among editorial contributors and freelancers working on Alliance Life content
  • Identifies, recruits, and collaborates with new and prospective writers; evaluates manuscripts for potential publication and accepts or rejects as appropriate
  • Provides strategic editorial direction by shaping content for clarity, narrative strength, and audience engagement, while maintaining consistency with Alliance Life’s editorial voice and standards
  • Establishes and maintains editorial policies and style guidelines in collaboration with the Director for Storytelling, applying them consistently across contributors, formats, and platforms
  • Provides fiscal oversight for Alliance Life by developing and managing the publication’s budget, aligning editorial and production spending with strategic goals and organizational priorities

Content Development & Curation

  • Plans upcoming issues and digital content well in advance of deadlines with attention to suitable subject matter, doctrinal distinctives, reader concerns, current religious issues, and field developments; conducts research to verify the factual accuracy of content
  • Commissions, edits, and curates feature stories and photography for both digital and print publication
  • Contributes to the graphic development of the magazine by helping to secure pertinent photos and supporting graphics for inclusion in the layout; determines when freelance assistance is needed and secures workers as approved by the Director of Storytelling
  • Coordinates with authors to ensure that factual data or unsupported statements meet publication requirements for completeness, continuity, and organizational alignment
  • Makes frequent contact within the National Office and with the C&MA constituency to secure supporting information and respond to inquiries
  • May be asked to attend biennial General Council and travel nationally or internationally for story-gathering assignments

The Christian and Missionary Alliance (The Alliance, the C&MA) was birthed in 1887 from a vision of Pastor A. B. Simpson in New York City, who became heartbroken over the plight of the homeless, the immigrant, and the marginalized. Today, we share his passion to offer tangible help and lasting hope to the world’s neediest people.

We believe that from the beginning of time, God set in motion a loving plan for humanity that is carried out in each of us through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. We believe the best way to see this plan fulfilled is by extending His love to those who have yet to experience it.

Through over 1,900 churches in the United States and nearly 700 workers in 70 countries, we pay forward the love of Jesus to suffering and overlooked people in our communities and throughout the world through a wide variety of developmental and compassionate care projects and initiatives.

Because the C&MA is a Christ-centered global movement, we place a high value on employing a diverse, multicultural workforce to accomplish His Great Commission. Accordingly, we will be proactive throughout our hiring process to embrace and cultivate racial and ethnic diversity among our U.S. National Office staff.
