What is a freelance machine learning?

A Freelance Machine Learning job involves working independently on machine learning projects for various clients instead of being employed by a single company. Freelancers may develop models, analyze data, fine-tune algorithms, or deploy AI solutions based on client needs. They often find work through freelance platforms, networking, or direct client outreach. This role offers flexibility in workload, project selection, and work location, but it also requires self-marketing and project management skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in freelance machine learning?

To thrive as a Freelance Machine Learning professional, you need a solid background in mathematics, statistics, programming (especially in Python or R), and experience with machine learning algorithms. Proficiency in tools like TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, and often cloud platforms such as AWS or Google Cloud is highly valuable, and certifications in data science or machine learning can enhance your credibility. Strong communication skills, self-motivation, and the ability to manage time and client relationships independently help you excel in a freelance setting. These abilities ensure you can deliver effective solutions, secure repeat clients, and adapt quickly to various project requirements in a competitive market.

What are common challenges faced by freelance machine learning professionals and how can they be managed?

Freelance Machine Learning professionals often face challenges such as managing multiple projects with varying requirements, keeping up with rapidly evolving technologies, and clarifying expectations with diverse clients. Effective time management, strong communication to set clear deliverables, and continual learning are key strategies to overcome these obstacles. Building a broad professional network and maintaining a strong online portfolio also help freelancers attract and retain clients. Staying organized and routinely updating technical skills can turn these challenges into opportunities for professional growth and success.

Can I do freelancing with machine learning?

Yes, machine learning professionals can work as freelancers by offering services such as data analysis, model development, and consulting. Successful freelancing in this field typically requires strong skills in programming, data handling, and familiarity with tools like Python, TensorFlow, or scikit-learn, along with a portfolio to attract clients.

Job description

About Step
Step's mission is to improve the financial future of the next generation. Millions of people use our banking and borrowing products to manage, build, and grow their money. Now that we're part of Beast Industries - the company behind MrBeast - we're poised for a new phase of growth to deliver financial literacy and tools at massive scale.
The role
Step is looking for an experienced Data Scientist to build and deploy Machine Learning models for all things Risk and Fraud.
What you'll do
  • Build and Deploy ML Models: You'll design, develop, and deploy machine learning models to enhance our Risk and Fraud detection systems. These models protect Step and our customers from fraud and financial loss.
  • Lead Technical Efforts: You'll take the lead in the Risk/Fraud area, providing technical direction and helping shape team's strategy.
  • Data Manipulation: You'll use SQL to efficiently fetch, transform, and manipulate data, ensuring it's ready for model development.
  • Code Development: You'll write production-grade code to deliver robust machine learning solutions.
  • Design Experiments: You'll apply statistics to guide experiments, determine appropriate sample sizes, and evaluate model performance.
  • Cross-Function Partnership: Parter with Operations Team to quickly respond to rapidly evolving events.
What we're looking for
  • 5+ years experience in Data Science or ML Engineering
  • Proficiency in SQL and Python
  • Ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent data analysis skills.
  • Experience developing and deploying machine learning models.
  • Experience, but not required, in working in financial systems, including lending or risk/fraud.

This role is available remotely within the U.S. or in our Palo Alto, CA office.
How we're different
We stand for the side hustlers, the creators, the freelancers, and the investors - people who are not afraid to take on challenges, especially when it comes to their finances. Step is focused on disrupting the banking industry by delivering a differentiated, mobile-first consumer experience, and we operate like the customers we serve: customer obsessed, acting as owners, moving with urgency, and breaking the norm.
Step is a wholly owned subsidiary of Beast Industries, the media and entertainment company founded by Jimmy Donaldson (MrBeast), the most-watched person in the world. Beast Industries spans digital media, consumer products, philanthropy, and new ventures, with an audience reach no consumer company has ever had - and Step is tasked with turning that reach into financial literacy and tools for the next generation at massive scale. With Beast's distribution and brand behind it, Step is positioned to scale significantly over the next 12 months, and joining now means helping shape that trajectory from the inside.
Come work with us!
Step is a remote-first company building banking for the next generation. We offer competitive compensation and stock options, generous medical, dental, vision, and company-paid life insurance, a 401k plan with Safe Harbor company matching, a flexible vacation policy and paid company holidays, 12 weeks paid parental leave with flexible return to work, and a company-provided technology package. If you're looking to join a fast-growing company with a strong mission and vision that puts people first, we want to meet you!
Step is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other status protected by applicable federal, state, or local law.
Step is committed to providing reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities throughout the application and interview process. If you need an accommodation, please let us know at people@step.com and we'll work with you to provide appropriate support.
