Job description

Senior Manager, Environment and Supply Chain Innovation (ESCI) - Metrics and Analytics

Sunnyvale, California, United States Operations and Supply Chain

Apple’s Environment and Supply Chain Innovation team is seeking an experienced manager to lead our work on lowering the environmental impacts of our world‑leading products. Our team develops detailed environmental models and analyses to drive strategic and relevant environmental initiatives at the product and corporate level. Our methods are rooted in life cycle assessment (LCA) and material flow analysis (MFA), but cover a range of fields within science, technology, and engineering. We are determined to uncover where impacts occur within our products and product supply chains, identify opportunities to mitigate those impacts, and drive initiatives to reduce those impacts. Are you passionate about reducing environmental impacts through innovative design? Do you have experience leading technical teams and interacting across a broad range of stakeholders, including engineering and operations? Do you have a knack for using detailed, data‑driven analyses to highlight and prioritize opportunities for environmental impact reduction?

As the senior manager of the metrics team, you’ll lead a team of experienced LCA professionals working on projects ranging from detailed environmental analyses of engineering decisions to high‑level reviews of modeling and reporting approaches. You will work closely with a range of cross‑functional teams — from engineering to operations to marketing — on a large variety of problems. You will be expected to develop a technical mastery of the team’s work, and will use storytelling along with the team’s data, analyses, and insights to advocate and influence policies, priorities, and projects.

Description
  • Define strategic team goals and priorities with input from senior leaders, partner teams, and direct reports
  • Develop longer‑term roadmaps to prepare for future needs - including initiating investigations that contribute to the team’s knowledge capital and promoting projects that enable the team to keep pace with a growing depth and breadth of activities
  • Prioritize and reprioritize asks and commitments to allow the team to deliver high‑impact, high‑quality analyses in a timely manner
  • Oversee the growth and development of a team of experienced life cycle assessment professionals
  • Develop data analytics and data visualization tools and capabilities within the team, to improve efficiency and communication of technical analyses
  • Facilitate ongoing collaboration with Product Design, Engineering, Manufacturing, Procurement, Marketing, Compliance, Legal, and other subject matter experts
  • Routinely influence and present to senior executives with succinct summaries and clear requests
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental science, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 10+ years of experience in environmental sustainability, life cycle assessment, environmental modeling, or a closely related quantitative technical discipline
  • 5+ years of direct people management experience leading technical teams
  • Experience translating technical analyses into concise presentations and recommendations for senior audiences
  • Experience leading multiple concurrent technical projects with competing and changing priorities
  • Experience partnering across functions such as engineering, operations, design, or procurement
Preferred Qualifications
  • MS, PhD, or MBA; engineering background preferred
  • 5+ years of direct people management experience, including developing and growing experienced technical individual contributors
  • Deep expertise in life cycle assessment, material flow analysis, environmental modeling, product development, and/or data analytics
  • Experience building data analytics and data visualization tools and capabilities to scale a technical team’s efficiency and communication
  • Relentless passion and enthusiasm for solving climate change
  • Ability to live and thrive in the engineering details while maintaining sight of strategic priorities
  • Curious and motivated, with a demonstrated ability to find answers, solve problems, and move projects forward
  • Comfort collaborating with diverse stakeholders while balancing their unique interests and goals
  • Courage and skill to tactfully challenge the status quo and respectfully push boundaries
  • Exceptional relationship‑building skills, resilience, and poise
