What is a freelance HTML & CSS?

A Freelance HTML & CSS job involves working independently to design and develop web pages using HTML for structure and CSS for styling. Freelancers take on projects from clients, which can range from creating new websites to updating existing ones. They often collaborate with designers, developers, and business owners to ensure websites are visually appealing and user-friendly. This role requires strong coding skills, attention to detail, and the ability to meet client deadlines.

What kinds of projects do freelance HTML & CSS professionals typically work on, and how do they collaborate with clients or teams?

Freelance HTML & CSS professionals commonly work on projects such as building new website layouts, updating existing site styles, creating landing pages, and ensuring responsive design across devices. They often communicate directly with clients to gather requirements, present drafts, and make revisions based on feedback—sometimes collaborating with graphic designers, JavaScript developers, or backend programmers if the project scope is larger. Most work is done independently, but freelancers must be proactive in maintaining clear communication and managing timelines. This role offers the flexibility to take on a variety of projects, which can help you grow your skill set and build a diverse portfolio over time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the freelance HTML & CSS position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance HTML & CSS specialist, you need a solid understanding of HTML5, CSS3, responsive design, and cross-browser compatibility, often supported by a portfolio demonstrating your work. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, code editors such as VS Code, and basic knowledge of web hosting platforms is typically expected, while certifications like freeCodeCamp or W3C can add credibility. Strong communication, time management, and problem-solving skills are essential for managing client expectations and multiple projects independently. These skills and qualities ensure you can deliver high-quality web solutions on schedule, maintain client satisfaction, and adapt to evolving technology requirements.

  • Collaborate with marketing/design teams to refine layouts and functionality using the Asana project management platform
  • Provide QA and testing before campaign deployment - exacting attention to details, very communicative and responsive

For Wordpress:

  • Manage content updates, including copy and media.
  • Develop and update custom PHP templates, using Advanced Custom Fields for custom content management.
  • Bonus: Knowledge and experience with Thesis.
Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of experience in email and Wordpress web development (freelance or professional).
  • Proven experience coding HTML emails (not just web HTML)

  • Hands-on experience with Mailchimp and Constant Contact (template structure, merge tags, campaign setup)
  • Familiarity with responsive email frameworks (e.g., hybrid/fluid design techniques)
  • Experience testing with tools like Litmus or Email on Acid (or equivalent methods)
  • Attention to detail and ability to meet quick turnaround times.
  • Strong knowledge of Bootstrap, Flexbox, and JavaScript.
  • Experience with WCAG, AIO, and SEO best practices.
  • Familiarity with project management tools (e.g. Asana) and standard development workflows.
  • Excellent communication skills and self-motivation while working autonomously in a remote environment.
Bonus Skills (Nice to Have):
  • Experience with accessibility best practices for email
  • Basic understanding of email marketing metrics and optimization
  • Familiarity with other ESPs (e.g., Klaviyo, HubSpot)

Schedule: Available weekly during EST business hours up to 10 hours/week remotely.

Compensation: $40 USD/hour.
