What is freelance engineering?

Freelance engineering refers to independent professionals who offer their engineering skills and services to various clients on a project or contract basis, rather than working as full-time employees for a single company. Freelance engineers can specialize in fields such as civil, mechanical, electrical, or software engineering. They often manage their own schedules, negotiate project terms, and are responsible for finding their own clients. This type of work allows for flexibility and the opportunity to work on diverse projects, but also requires self-motivation and business management skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Engineer, you need strong technical expertise in your engineering discipline, a relevant degree, and often several years of hands-on experience. Familiarity with industry-standard design software (like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or MATLAB), project management tools, and relevant certifications (such as PE or PMP) are typically required. Exceptional communication, time management, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for building client relationships and managing independent projects. These skills ensure you can deliver high-quality work, meet deadlines, and maintain a steady flow of clients in a competitive freelance marketplace.

What challenges might I face when managing multiple freelance engineering projects simultaneously?

As a freelance engineer, juggling several projects at once can present challenges such as balancing diverse client expectations, meeting overlapping deadlines, and prioritizing tasks efficiently. Effective time management and clear communication are crucial to ensure that each project receives the attention it needs. Many freelancers find using project management tools and setting transparent boundaries with clients helps maintain productivity and workflow. Additionally, staying organized with documentation and regularly reviewing project progress can help you avoid common pitfalls like scope creep or missed deliverables.

Villatel

Job description

The Role
We are seeking a freelance designer with demonstrated copywriting ability to produce guest-facing and property collateral for Villatel Resort Orlando. The work spans print and digital: menus, welcome materials, directories, signage, event collateral, sales materials, and on-property digital displays - executed within established brand standards and finished to a standard that holds up in a premium setting.
This is an ongoing engagement of approximately 10-15 hours per week, with flexibility to scale up or down according to seasonal volume.
Scope of Work
  • In-villa collateral - welcome cards and letters, villa directories, amenity and instructional signage, activity guides, QR-linked materials
  • Food and beverage - restaurant and poolside menus, specials cards, event and catering menus, digital menu boards
  • Event and seasonal materials - invitations, programs, posters, table tents, and on-property signage for activations, holiday programming, and private events
  • Sales and group collateral - property one-pagers, rate sheets, meetings and celebrations materials, presentation decks
  • Digital assets - on-property digital signage and screens, web page graphics and banners, digital versions of guest-facing materials
  • Copywriting - headlines, body copy, and calls to action across the above, plus editing and proofing of existing copy
  • Production management - print-ready file preparation, specification coordination with printers and vendors, and maintenance of an organized asset library

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum three years of professional design and writing experience, with a portfolio demonstrating refined print and digital work
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite or Figma; working knowledge of Canva for templated assets
  • Demonstrated copywriting ability - menu descriptions, headlines, and short-form guest communications written to a publishable standard
  • Strong command of print production: bleeds, color management, resolution, paper stocks, finishing, and vendor specifications
  • Competence designing to digital specifications, including screen dimensions, resolution, and web-ready file formats
  • Ability to work within brand guidelines and extend them credibly into new formats
  • Availability during U.S. Eastern business hours for review cycles and time-sensitive requests
  • Background in luxury hospitality, resorts, hotels, or fine dining, with an understanding of how collateral supports the guest journey
  • Experience with resort or attraction-adjacent properties serving families and groups
  • Familiarity with Figma
  • Typographic sensibility and comfort with restrained, editorial layout
  • Located in or near Orlando, with occasional availability for on-property work

Attributes We Value
  • Refined creative judgment. You understand the difference between decorative and considered, and you consistently choose the latter.
  • Exacting attention to detail. Typography, spacing, alignment, and copy accuracy are non-negotiable in your work.
  • Organization and self-direction. You manage your own deadlines, maintain disciplined file structures, and require minimal oversight.
  • Responsiveness. You communicate proactively, acknowledge feedback promptly, and see projects through.
  • Professional collaboration. You take direction gracefully and offer a considered alternative when you believe there's a stronger solution.
  • Range with consistency. Whether a piece is playful or formal, it reads as unmistakably Villatel.

Engagement Details
  • Classification: Independent contractor (1099)
  • Hours: 10-15 hours per week, ongoing, with seasonal flexibility
  • Location: Remote; Orlando-area candidates preferred
  • Compensation: [hourly range], commensurate with experience
  • Reports to: Creative Director, Villatel Resort Orlando
  • Tools: Contractor provides own hardware and software licenses

At Villatel, exceptional guest experiences start with an exceptional team, and we're looking for people who share our passion for hospitality. We offer competitive pay, flexible scheduling, and real opportunities to grow within an upscale resort brand redefining Orlando hospitality. Join us and help create the moments guests remember!
