How much do freelance design jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 30, 2026, the average hourly pay for freelance design in Connecticut is $45.38, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $23.08 and $58.75 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is freelance design?

Freelance design is a type of creative work where designers operate as independent contractors rather than as full-time employees of a single company. Freelance designers offer services such as graphic design, web design, branding, and illustration to various clients on a project-by-project basis. This role allows for flexible schedules and the ability to work with a diverse range of clients and industries. Freelance designers are responsible for finding their own clients, managing projects, setting rates, and handling administrative tasks such as invoicing and contracts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Designer, you need strong visual design skills, proficiency in design principles, and a portfolio demonstrating your creative work. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, or Sketch, as well as knowledge of web design basics and file management systems, is essential. Excellent communication, time management, and client relationship skills help you stand out in managing projects independently. These abilities are crucial for delivering high-quality work, meeting client expectations, and sustaining a successful freelance career.

How do freelance designers typically manage client expectations and project timelines?

Freelance designers often juggle multiple clients and projects simultaneously, making clear communication and organization essential. They usually set expectations by outlining deliverables, timelines, and milestones in a contract before starting any project. Regular check-ins, progress updates, and the use of project management tools help ensure that both the client and designer stay aligned throughout the process. Handling revisions efficiently and being transparent about potential delays are also key to maintaining strong client relationships.

Job description

About Us:
IMPACT provides digital marketing services to help small to mid-sized businesses implement Endless Customers (formerly They Ask, You Answer), inspired by the popular book by Marcus Sheridan. We empower clients to build in-house marketing operations that drive growth - eliminating reliance on outside agencies and positioning their companies as the most trusted brands in their markets.
Swell is IMPACT's paid media agency, partnering with clients to plan, build, and manage advertising programs across Google, Meta, LinkedIn, and other digital platforms - turning paid spend into a measurable pipeline.
About the Role:You are the creative anchor for Swell's paid media clients. You own ad creative from concept through final asset: design strategy, first drafts, revision cycles, and the production pipeline that gets variants out the door.
This role requires using an AI-assisted production stack. You'll spend your hours on the work that requires judgment - concepting, client-facing creative strategy, and revision decisions - not hand-resizing 40 banner variants.
You'll work directly with our Head of Paid Media and alongside contract design and video talent whose output you quality-check before it reaches a client.
What you'll own:
  • Creative strategy per client. You run the design strategy process for each account - competitor and market research, testing plans, and campaign concepts tied to performance data.
  • Static ad design. First drafts and full campaign suites for Meta, Google, and LinkedIn. Data-driven creative that's built to convert, not win awards.
  • Revision cycles. Internal and client feedback rounds, managed to a standard: tight turnarounds, limited rounds, clear rationale when you push back.
  • The AI production pipeline. You operate and improve our versioning/resizing workflow. When a new tool cuts production time without cutting quality, you test it and systematize it.
  • Video creative direction. Scripting, storyboards, and creative briefs for video ads. Editing execution is a plus.
  • Contractor quality control. Offshore and freelance design output goes through you before it ships. If it's not client-ready, it doesn't go out.
  • Asset hygiene. Working files, final files, and folder structure stay organized and findable. The next person can pick up any account cold.

What does success in the role look like?
You will be responsible for metrics like:
  • First-draft turnaround time per request
  • Revision rounds per asset (target: ≤2)
  • On-time delivery rate across active accounts
  • Creative test volume shipped per client per month

Exact targets are set with you in your first 30 days.
Requirements
  • 3-5 years designing digital ad creative (agency or in-house performance marketing)
  • A portfolio of direct-response work with proven results
  • Deep understanding of branding & digital buyer psychology
  • Advanced proficiency in: Adobe photoshop, Google Business Suite
  • Fluency in Figma
  • Experience with Adobe Premiere Pro & Creatopy / The Brief or a comparable ad production platform is a plus
  • Comfort attending video calls and talking strategy with clients.
  • Meticulous attention to detail (typos, alignment, brand compliance)
  • Strong written communication; you'll explain creative decisions to clients and teammates in writing daily
  • You can take direct feedback, give direct feedback, and hold a quality bar with contractors without drama
  • You're a voracious learner and consistently focus on your personal development
  • Excellent time management skills

AI & Automation
We strongly prefer designers who already use (or are eager to use):
  • AI-assisted image generation or enhancement
  • Background removal, upscaling, smart resizing
  • Template-based workflows
  • Any AI tools that reduce repetitive effort without sacrificing quality

(You don't need to use the same tools we do - just show us how you work faster.
Bonus
  • Scriptwriting & video editing skills
  • Experience inside an EOS, Traction, or ScalingUp company
  • Familiarity with Looker Studio, Google Analytics, or other reporting tools
  • Comfortable using AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT) inside daily ops workflows

Tools you'll use daily
ClickUp, Basecamp, Slack, Zoom, Google Workspace, Claude, Zapier, Swydo, Vidyard
Benefits
This position offers a competitive salary range of $60,000 to $70,000, based on experience.
IMPACT provides a comprehensive benefits package, including:
  • Health, vision, and dental coverage
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off and a flexible work schedule
  • Paid parental leave to support your growing family

We are committed to supporting our team members with a combination of financial rewards, work-life balance, and the flexibility to thrive in a dynamic, collaborative environment.
Work Environment
At IMPACT, our culture is built on our core values of being proactive, accountable, caring, and team-oriented. We are a group of driven professionals who are passionate about growing in our careers, delivering exceptional results for our clients, and supporting one another every step of the way. Mediocrity isn't an option - we show up every day committed to being our best and getting better. Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do, and we foster an environment free of egos, drama, or excuses. We're a supportive, no-nonsense team united by a shared mission: to create heroes, grow businesses, and change lives.
This is a fully remote position, open to candidates anywhere in the United States. We expect a professional, distraction-free workspace equipped with strong internet, good lighting, and an environment conducive to client-facing work.
Working hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Eastern Time to align with client schedules and internal team operations. We offer flexibility for independent work outside of client meetings and team rituals.
Travel is minimal but may include occasional trips to visit clients, typically no more than a few times per quarter. Additionally, travel will be required to attend IMPACT's conferences, held twice a year. These events are a great opportunity to connect with clients, colleagues, and the broader community we serve. Travel requirements will be discussed in advance, and accommodations will be provided as needed.
IMPACT is an equal opportunity employer and values diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
IMPACT provides reasonable accommodations to individuals with disabilities in the hiring process and throughout employment, as required by law.
