Job description

If you're looking for an opportunity to apply your insurance and risk management expertise within a nationally recognized real estate platform, Hanover offers a unique and highly visible career opportunity.
Based in Hanover's Houston corporate office, the Risk Management Specialist plays a critical role in supporting the company's development, construction, and property management operations across the United States. This position works directly with senior leaders, insurance brokers, underwriters, legal counsel, and operational teams to manage risk, ensure contractual compliance, and support Hanover's comprehensive insurance portfolio.
Hanover owns, develops, constructs, and manages high-quality multifamily communities throughout major U.S. markets. Our vertically integrated business model creates a complex and dynamic risk environment that provides exposure to all aspects of real estate ownership and operations, including development, construction, property management, acquisitions, financing, and corporate risk management.
Why Hanover?
  • Exposure to a nationally recognized multifamily real estate platform
  • Direct involvement with development, construction, property management, and corporate operations
  • Opportunity to work closely with executive leadership, legal counsel, insurance brokers, and carriers
  • Meaningful responsibility and ownership of key insurance and risk management initiatives
  • Collaborative, entrepreneurial culture focused on excellence and accountability
  • Company-paid medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage for employees
  • Competitive compensation and bonus program that rewards performance and contribution

We're looking for a detail-oriented risk management professional with strong commercial insurance knowledge and experience managing complex insurance programs. The ideal candidate understands contractual risk transfer, insurance compliance, underwriting processes, and policy administration, and enjoys partnering with stakeholders across multiple business functions to support operational success and protect company assets.
This role is ideal for an experienced professional seeking broader responsibility, increased visibility, and exposure to the full lifecycle of commercial real estate ownership and operations.
Key Responsibilities
Insurance Underwriting & Program Administration
  • Assist with underwriting submissions across Hanover's insurance portfolio by gathering, organizing, and analyzing information required by brokers, underwriters, and carriers.
  • Support the administration of multiple commercial insurance programs, including property, general liability, workers' compensation, builders' risk, cyber liability, crime, management liability, professional liability, and wrap insurance programs.
  • Manage designated insurance policies, including Contractor's Equipment, Drone, Travel Accident, and other corporate insurance programs, ensuring accurate policy administration and documentation.

National Flood Insurance Program
  • Lead Hanover's National Flood Insurance Program, including applications, policy renewals, certificates, broker communications, and policy record maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate flood insurance records and assist with compliance requirements related to covered properties.

Surety Bond Management
  • Manage the full lifecycle of surety bonds, including applications, issuance, renewals, invoicing, tracking, and exoneration activities.
  • Coordinate with internal teams, brokers, sureties, and project stakeholders to ensure contractual bonding requirements are met and documentation is maintained accurately and timely.

Insurance Renewals & Financial Administration
  • Track insurance policy renewals and support the timely processing of insurance invoices and premium payments in coordination with the Accounting team.
  • Assist with policy audits, premium reconciliations, and related insurance reporting requirements.

Contract Review & Insurance Compliance
  • Review contracts and agreements to identify insurance requirements and assist in evaluating compliance with Hanover's insurance standards.
  • Support the review of development management agreements, joint venture agreements, property management agreements, construction contracts, leases, loan documents, and other agreements requiring insurance review.
  • Provide guidance and recommendations regarding insurance provisions, contractual insurance requirements, and risk transfer language

Risk Management Support
  • Serve as a resource to development, construction, property management, accounting, legal, and corporate teams regarding insurance requirements, contractual compliance, and risk management procedures.
  • Assist with insurance audits, claims-related requests, broker inquiries, and special projects as assigned.
  • Support the implementation of risk management initiatives designed to protect company assets and mitigate operational risk.

Data Management & Reporting
  • Maintain and update Hanover's risk management database to ensure accurate information is available for insurance renewals, underwriting submissions, compliance reviews, and reporting.
  • Assist in preparing reports, schedules, and supporting documentation for insurance renewals, audits, and management review.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Finance, Business Administration, Insurance, Real Estate, or a related field.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in risk management, commercial insurance, brokerage, underwriting, or a related field, preferably supporting real estate, construction, development, or property management operations.
  • Strong working knowledge of commercial insurance programs, including policy placement, coverage analysis, binders, endorsements, certificates of insurance, audits, renewals, and claims administration.
  • Strong understanding of development, construction, and property management operations, including contractual insurance requirements and risk allocation principles.
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting insurance requirements contained within contracts, including construction agreements, property management agreements, loan documents, and joint venture agreements.
  • Understanding of contractual risk transfer principles, indemnification provisions, and insurance compliance requirements.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate risk exposures and recommend practical business solutions.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with internal stakeholders, brokers, carriers, attorneys, and executive leadership.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
  • Experience working with contract management systems, risk management information systems, Procore, TimberScan, Entrata, or similar platforms.
  • Professional designations such as ARM, CPCU, CRIS, or equivalent are highly desirable.
  • Ability to work onsite at Hanover's corporate headquarters in Houston, Texas.
