About Precon Events

Precon Events is an industry leader in live event production, known for creating emotional, memorable experiences around the world. Our team of Producers, Technical Directors, Project Managers, and Event Gurus brings together world-class talent and cutting-edge technology to deliver exceptional events. We thrive under pressure and are committed to excellence in every facet of event planning and execution.

Role Summary

At the center of these extraordinary events is the Technical Director, a creative technologist who transforms bold ideas into executable, scalable production systems. This role goes beyond traditional show execution, bringing modern expertise in live, hybrid, and virtual production environments. The Technical Director ensure that every technical element is not only functional, but forward-thinking, integrated, and resilient under pressure.

Reporting to the Director of Event Operations, the Technical Director (TD) leads the technical planning and execution of in-person, hybrid, and virtual events. Working closely with Producers, Project Managers, Creative Services, warehouse teams, vendors, and external partners, the TD oversees technical strategy, system design, vendor coordination, pre-production planning, and onsite execution to ensure alignment across creative vision, technical execution, timelines, and budget.

Why you will love working here

You'll play a central role in bringing high-impact events to life in the nation's capital and beyond, working alongside a collaborative team that values creativity, accountability, and continuous growth. This role offers true ownership of complex, full-scale productions. Success in this role requires a unique blend of technical mastery, creative problem-solving, and disciplined planning. The ideal Technical Director is equal parts strategist and technician, someone who builds systems - not just shows - and ensures every production is set up for success well before arriving on-site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Pre-Production & Technical Design
    • Interpret creative briefs and translate them into detailed technical documentation (CAD drawings, signal flow diagrams, RFPs, gear lists)
    • Lead comprehensive technical planning processes, ensuring labor, equipment, and workflows are fully defined prior to show site
    • Manage technical budgets, ensuring cost-effective solutions while maintaining creative integrity
    • Assess venue capabilities and infrastructure (power, rigging, internet, dock access)
    • Identify risks early and implement contingency plans to prevent on-site failures
  • Vendor & Crew Management
    • Source, select, and coordinate with A/V and technical vendors
    • Own technical labor strategy, including staffing forecasts and contingency planning
    • Build and maintain a network of technical partners and freelancers for global events
    • Ensure all vendors and partners deliver to specifications, timelines, and quality standards
  • Onsite Execution
    • Serve as the primary technical lead on-site for load-in, show execution, and load-out
    • Lead technical teams through complex builds and live show environments
    • Troubleshoot technical issues in real time and direct rapid resolution
    • Participate in client and venue meetings, technical rehearsals, and production meetings
    • Maintain calm, professional leadership under pressure
  • Post-Event Support
    • Document post-show reports and evaluate technical performance
    • Analyze root causes of challenges and implement process improvements
    • Contribute to continuous improvement of technical systems, workflows, and standards
