What does a freelance CNC router programmer do?

A Freelance CNC Router Programmer creates and optimizes programs that control CNC (computer numerical control) routers used in manufacturing and fabrication. They interpret design blueprints or CAD files to develop tool paths and instructions for cutting, carving, or shaping materials like wood, plastic, or metal. Working independently, they may collaborate with clients to customize designs, troubleshoot issues, and ensure efficient machine operation. These professionals are skilled in CAD/CAM software and understand both programming and machining processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance CNC router programmer?

To thrive as a Freelance CNC Router Programmer, you need expertise in CNC programming, knowledge of machining processes, and proficiency in reading technical drawings, often supported by experience or a relevant certification in CNC operations. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software (such as Fusion 360 or Mastercam) and the ability to operate and troubleshoot CNC routers are essential technical competencies. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication with clients set top professionals apart in this field. These skills ensure accurate, efficient production, minimize errors, and help maintain strong client relationships in a competitive freelance environment.

Job description

About ACME Industries

ACME Industries is a 70+ year aerospace and defense manufacturer headquartered in Elk Grove Village, IL. We own and solve complex problems — manufacturing precision solutions for mission-critical, long-life applications across the industries that matter most. We are financially healthy, growing, and investing in the people and capabilities that will carry us to the next chapter.

Position Summary: Second Shift CNC Bore Mill Machinist

The CNC Bore Mill Machinist is a skilled, experienced operator responsible for the setup, operation, and quality verification of CNC horizontal boring mill equipment. This role is critical to ACME's production capacity and supports the second-shift execution of precision components for aerospace, defense, and industrial customers. The right candidate brings deep machine knowledge, a self-sufficient approach to setup and troubleshooting, and the discipline to hold tight tolerances on complex, high-value parts.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Set up and operate CNC horizontal boring mills to produce precision components from engineering drawings, routers, and work orders
  • Select and install tooling, fixtures, and workholding equipment appropriate to the job
  • Perform in-process and final inspection using precision measurement tools (micrometers, bore gauges, CMM where applicable)
  • Read and interpret GD&T, blueprints, and shop travelers with accuracy
  • Monitor feeds, speeds, and tool wear; make offsets and adjustments to maintain tolerances
  • Identify and resolve machine alarms, tooling issues, and surface condition problems independently
  • Maintain accurate production records, first-article documentation, and non-conformance reports as required
  • Follow all safety, quality, and housekeeping standards; support 5S on the shop floor
  • Collaborate with day-shift operators and production management to ensure smooth shift transitions and workload continuity
  • Participate in cross-training and knowledge transfer activities as the operation grows
Qualifications

Required:

  • Ability to work second shift consistently starting at 4:00 PM Monday through Friday with Voluntary Overtime available
  • 5+ years of hands-on CNC boring mill experience (horizontal boring mill preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to set up jobs independently — not operator-only experience
  • Proficiency reading blueprints and GD&T
  • Experience with precision measurement and inspection

Preferred:

  • Experience in aerospace, defense, or heavy industrial manufacturing
  • Familiarity with FANUC controls
  • Exposure to AS9100 or ISO quality management systems
  • Experience machining large, complex, low-volume parts
What We Offer
  • Competitive hourly wage commensurate with experience
  • Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k)
  • A stable, growing company with 70+ years of history and a long-term ownership mindset
  • Investment in your development — we build careers, not just headcounts

You should be proficient in:

  • GD&T
  • Equipment Troubleshooting
  • CNC Tooling
  • Troubleshooting Skills
  • CNC Programming
  • G-Code
  • Precision Measurement & Hand Metrology
  • Advanced Inspection & Gauge Measurement
  • Machine Setups for Production Runs

Machines & technologies you'll use:

  • Horizontal Machining Center (3-4 axis) (Toyoda, Dmg Mori Seiki)
  • Horizontal Machining Center (5+ axis) (Toyoda)
