How much do freelance cfd simulation engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for freelance cfd simulation engineer in the United States is $93,015.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $85,500.00 and $110,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance CFD simulation engineers when working with clients remotely?

Freelance CFD simulation engineers often encounter challenges related to communication and project scope when collaborating remotely with clients. Clearly defining project requirements, expected deliverables, and timelines can be difficult without in-person meetings, which may lead to misunderstandings or revisions. Additionally, freelancers are responsible for managing their own workflow, troubleshooting technical issues independently, and ensuring that simulation results are presented in a way that is easily understood by non-technical stakeholders. Building trust and maintaining transparency with clients through regular updates and clear documentation is crucial to overcoming these challenges.

What is the difference between Freelance Cfd Simulation Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectFreelance Cfd Simulation EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, CFD certificationsEngineering degree, CAD certifications
Work EnvironmentRemote, project-basedOffice or on-site, product development
Industry UsageEngineering consulting, simulation servicesProduct design, manufacturing

The Freelance Cfd Simulation Engineer specializes in computational fluid dynamics analysis on a project basis, often working remotely for various clients. In contrast, a Mechanical Design Engineer focuses on designing mechanical components and systems, typically within a company or manufacturing setting. Both roles require engineering credentials, but their work environments and industry applications differ significantly.

What are Freelance CFD Simulation Engineers?

Freelance CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) Simulation Engineers are independent professionals who use computer software to analyze and solve problems involving fluid flows, heat transfer, and related phenomena. They work on a project-by-project basis for various clients, often in industries like aerospace, automotive, energy, and manufacturing. Their responsibilities include setting up simulation models, running analyses, interpreting results, and providing recommendations to improve designs or processes. Freelance CFD engineers typically possess strong technical backgrounds in engineering or physics and are skilled in software such as ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM, or COMSOL Multiphysics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance CFD Simulation Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Freelance CFD Simulation Engineer, you need a solid background in fluid dynamics, numerical analysis, and engineering principles, often demonstrated by a relevant degree. Expertise in industry-standard CFD software such as ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM, or COMSOL, along with proficiency in programming languages like Python or MATLAB, is crucial. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to manage projects independently are standout soft skills for this role. These abilities are vital for delivering accurate simulations, meeting client expectations, and maintaining a successful freelance practice.

Job description

Cooling performance limits high-power computing, semiconductor fab, cell networks, photonics, power electronics, and most of our digital world. JCI enables customers to overcome these constraints with novel, complex metal components that dramatically improve heat dissipation in high-performance systems. JCI's patented Stack Forging™ process enables complex micro-geometries, resulting in single-piece, leak-tight parts that deliver superior cooling performance, lower pressure drops, and exceptional reliability.
This role generally requires 4 days onsite per week.
What you'll do:
As a Simulation Engineer you will use hand calculations and computational tools to predict the performance of JCI's industry-leading thermal management components. You will work closely with JCI's Solutions Engineers and Thermal Design Engineers on optimizing designs to meet challenging customer requirements. You will have the opportunity to help develop our simulation best practices and learn from our current simulation experts.
This role generally requires 4 days onsite per week.
Responsibilities:
*Responsibilities are subject to change based on shifting business needs
  • Do hand calculations, select appropriate correlation coefficients, and build simple scaling models

  • Perform coupled thermo-fluid simulations using CFD software to predict pressure drop and thermal performance

  • Provide guidance and input on customer development projects

  • Develop and improve best practices around simulation

Qualifications:
  • Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or other relevant field

  • 2-5 years of industry experience

  • Experience with Siemens SimCenter or similar (required)

  • Experience in thermal-fluid simulation and analysis, including but not limited to comfort with selecting turbulence closures, running mesh refinement studies, estimating model error, and extracting dimensionless correlation coefficients from simulations

  • Experience with a wide range of reference literature on calculating thermal and fluid behavior of components

  • Ability to deliver results in a quickly evolving environment, delivering estimates for thermal performance of a design within a few days to accelerate customer-facing projects

  • Familiarity with design engineering work, specifically, an understanding of what an engineering design process looks like and how their work informs that process

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $90000 - $110000. Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data. This position includes a competitive benefits package. The posted salary range reflects the target compensation for this role. However, we recognize that exceptional candidates may bring unique skills and experiences that exceed the typical profile. If you believe your background warrants consideration beyond the stated range, we encourage you to apply. To
