What is freelance book writing?

A Freelance Book Writing job involves writing books on a project-by-project basis for clients, publishers, or personal publication. Freelance book writers can work in various genres, including fiction, non-fiction, memoirs, and business books. They often collaborate with clients to develop content, conduct research, and ensure the final product meets the client's vision. Unlike traditional authors, freelance book writers are typically hired on contract and may not always retain ownership of their work. This career offers flexibility but requires strong writing skills, discipline, and the ability to meet deadlines.

What skills and qualifications are needed for freelance book writing?

To thrive as a Freelance Book Writer, you need excellent writing, editing, and research skills, often supported by a portfolio of previous work and strong command of grammar and storytelling. Familiarity with publishing platforms, word processing software (such as Microsoft Word or Scrivener), and sometimes knowledge of content management systems is beneficial. Key soft skills include time management, self-motivation, and the ability to communicate effectively with clients or editors. These abilities help freelancers deliver high-quality manuscripts on deadline while successfully collaborating and managing multiple projects in a competitive marketplace.

What challenges do freelance book writers face and how can they be managed?

Freelance book writers often face challenges such as inconsistent workloads, tight deadlines, and difficulty maintaining motivation over long projects. Managing these challenges involves developing strong project management habits, setting regular writing schedules, and maintaining clear communication with clients or publishers. Networking with other writers and joining professional organizations can also help build a support system and provide new project leads. Staying organized and proactively marketing your services are key to overcoming the uncertainties and building a stable freelance writing career.

Is freelance book writing still in demand?

Freelance book writing remains in demand as self-publishing and digital content creation grow, with many writers finding opportunities in fiction, non-fiction, and educational materials. Success often depends on strong writing skills, niche expertise, and the ability to market oneself online through platforms and social media.

Job description

This is a paid freelance and remote position
ScreenRant is the #1 entertainment website and publishes breaking news and exclusives on blockbuster movies, TV shows, comic books, books, and other forms of entertainment.
As a worldwide leader, ScreenRant operates at a rapid pace and is always looking for experienced and passionate contributors who can create original high-quality content in a timely manner.
We are currently expanding our books coverage and looking for generalist book fans who can tackle big, broad recommendation lists and keep readers on top of what to read next.
Please note: this is not a book reviewer position. We do not publish reviews at this time. The bulk of this work - roughly 80% - is recommendation and ranking lists, with the remainder made up of book news and features. If your goal is to write critical reviews of individual titles, this role is not the right fit.
Your Responsibilities
  • Write list and feature articles in ScreenRant's house style following the training and peer mentorship period.
  • Cover current and upcoming book releases and book news.
  • Stay on top of new releases across multiple genres.
  • Brainstorm, pitch, and develop original content ideas.
  • Communicate actively with the Editorial Team.
What We Offer
  • Competitive compensation.
  • Consistent and timely payments.
  • Flexible schedule.
  • Remote freelance position to work from a location of your choice.
  • Exposure to ScreenRant's large and passionate audience, providing you an exciting opportunity to make a genuine impact.
Experience and Skills
  • Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, English Literature, or a related field/equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of experience writing about books, or experience writing on other topics in a credible publication plus evidence of book expertise through review platforms or socials.
  • A broad working knowledge of the book and publishing landscape as a generalist reader - comfortable writing broad lists and recommendations rather than covering a single niche.
  • Reads across science fiction/fantasy AND at least one other major genre. Readers who stay within a single genre (e.g. only romance, only horror, or only literary fiction) are not a fit for this role.
  • Actively keeps up with new and upcoming releases.
  • Strong, demonstrable comfort with the list format and fast turnaround times.
  • A quick learner with a strong sense of urgency and drive.
  • An excellent writer in the English language free of grammatical and spelling errors.
  • Comfortable working in a fully remote environment.
Considered an Asset
  • Freelance writing experience with comparable entertainment, pop-culture, or books publications.
  • Possesses A NetGalley account or familiarity with the platform
  • An active Bookstagram or BookTok with a significant following.
  • Participation in publisher influencer or advance-reader programs.
  • Experience in any capacity with review/tracking platforms such as BookBub, StoryGraph, Goodreads, or Fable.
