The Opportunity

We're looking for a Commercial Lines Fleet Unit Manager to join our Alberta Branch, reporting directly to the AVP, Head of Underwriting. This role will primarily support our Alberta broker partners.

What you'll do
  • Lead, inspire and develop a team of underwriters through meaningful coaching, mentorship and technical guidance.

  • Model and strengthen broker relationships, positioning Aviva as a market of choice for mutually profitable business.

  • Own and execute the strategy for your assigned broker panel, influencing both premium growth and loss ratio performance.

  • Communicate strategy clearly to your team and ensure alignment with the branch, Aviva Business and the Aviva Canada strategy.

  • Represent Aviva Business in regular in- person and virtual meetings enhancing our market presence.

  • Collaborate closely with Broker Distribution to advance strategic initiatives for Commercial Insurance.

  • Drive operational efficiency, including monitoring workflow, ingestion of work, resource allocation and internal/external commitments.

  • Drive operational efficiency through workflow oversight, resource allocation, and service level performance.

  • Support complex underwriting decisions, including risk assessments and broker negotiations on pricing and terms.

  • Manage team performance through goal setting, performance reviews, technical development, and performance management.

  • Support governance, file review processes, and continuous improvement related to products, pricing, and technology.

  • Foster a collaborative team culture and work closely with peers, senior specialists and the Head of Underwriting.

  • Adopt a One Aviva mindset by partnering with internal stakeholders such as Claims, Operations, Billing and Head office underwriting.

  • Champion continuous learning and remain engaged with the broader Aviva Business and Aviva Canada initiatives.

What you'll bring
  • Minimum 10 years of commercial auto insurance experience, ideally with leadership responsibilities.

  • Post-secondary education or equivalent practical experience

  • CIP/FCIP designation preferred

  • Strong understanding of commercial auto insurance operations

  • Knowledge of competitor wordings and market appetite (an asset)

  • Proven leadership and relationship management skills.

  • Excellent underwriting judgement and branch operations knowledge

  • Ability to build strong internal and external relationships

  • Strong organizational, analytical, and decision-making skills

  • Experience with Management Information, including development and maintenance of pipelines, financial reports and performance reporting

  • Operational acumen and tracking of performance metrics

  • Excellent communication skills
