What is a fragrance consultant?

Fragrance Consultants are professionals who assist customers in selecting perfumes and other scented products that best suit their preferences and needs. They have in-depth knowledge of various fragrances, their notes, and how they interact with different skin types. Fragrance Consultants provide personalized recommendations, educate customers about new releases, and often help with product demonstrations in retail settings. Their expertise helps enhance the shopping experience and ensures customers find scents they love.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fragrance consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fragrance Consultant, you need strong product knowledge, customer service skills, and often retail experience, with a high school diploma or equivalent typically required. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems and brand-specific training or certifications can be beneficial. Excellent communication, active listening, and persuasive skills help build rapport with customers and tailor recommendations. These competencies ensure personalized customer experiences, drive sales, and foster brand loyalty in a competitive retail environment.

What are some common challenges faced by fragrance consultants when assisting customers, and how can they be addressed?

Fragrance Consultants often encounter challenges such as identifying a customer's personal scent preferences and navigating fragrance allergies or sensitivities. To address these, consultants use their product knowledge to ask guided questions, offer samples, and suggest alternatives that align with the client's tastes and needs. Building rapport, staying updated on fragrance trends, and maintaining patience are key to creating a positive, tailored experience for each customer.

Job description

International Fragrance Sourcing Consultant
About the Role
We're looking for someone who knows how to find and buy full-size, genuine fragrance products through the international gray market (parallel/secondary distribution channels) - not directly from brands. You'll build a network of wholesalers, exporters, and distributors around the world, negotiate pricing, and make sure everything we bring in is authentic and properly documented.
This is a hands-on sourcing role for a fast-growing fragrance subscription business. You'll report to the COO and work closely with Purchasing, Quality, and Legal.
What You'll Do
  • Identify and vet international wholesalers, exporters, and parallel-market distributors who sell genuine full-size fragrance (regions like Dubai/UAE, Europe, Singapore, and others as needed)
  • Build direct relationships and negotiate pricing, minimum order quantities, and payment terms
  • Confirm authenticity and traceability of goods before purchase - including checking for counterfeit risk, verifying trademark/import compliance, and working with Legal on gray-market exposure
  • Manage the full sourcing cycle: supplier discovery, sampling, quality checks, purchase orders, and logistics coordination
  • Track import documentation (customs records, bills of lading, certificates of origin) to keep every purchase clean and defensible
  • Monitor pricing trends and excess/closeout inventory across international markets to find the best deals
  • Partner with Quality to inspect incoming full-size product for damage, mislabeling, or spec issues
  • Keep a running supplier scorecard: reliability, pricing, lead times, and any red flags
  • Stay current on brand trademark disputes and legal actions involving gray-market fragrance distributors, and flag risk early

What You'll Need
  • 10+ years in international sourcing, procurement, or supply chain - ideally in fragrance, beauty, or CPG
  • Direct experience with gray-market or parallel-import sourcing (you understand how it's different from authorized distribution, and the legal gray areas involved)
  • A working network of, or ability to quickly build relationships with, international fragrance wholesalers and exporters
  • Comfort reading customs and trade data (bills of lading, import/export records) to vet suppliers
  • Strong negotiation skills and experience managing supplier contracts across currencies and time zones
  • Working knowledge of trademark and parallel-import law as it applies to consumer goods (not a legal expert, but able to spot risk and loop in Legal)
  • Willingness to travel internationally to meet suppliers and inspect goods

Nice to Have
  • Existing relationships with fragrance wholesalers in Dubai, Europe, or Singapore
  • Experience in the fragrance subscription, discount beauty, or off-price retail space
  • A second language (Arabic, Dutch, or another relevant to key sourcing regions)

A Note on What This Role Is
This role sources genuine, authentic full-size fragrance through parallel/secondary market channels - not counterfeit goods. Every supplier and shipment must be vetted for authenticity, and every deal reviewed for legal exposure before it closes.
About Scentbird
Scentbird inspires fragrance lovers to go beyond the ordinary and sample scents that evoke passion, confidence, and the unknown. Our mission is to revolutionize the way we perfume by bringing the ultimate fragrance playground right to your fingertips and offering a digital subscription service that lets members choose from over 500+ designer perfumes each month.
About the Brands:
  • Scentbird: The easiest way for fragrance lovers to discover, try, and buy their favorite scented products without a commitment
  • Deck of Scarlet: Deck of Scarlet is on a mission to break the clean category, redefining what clean fragrances should smell like. Composed entirely of vegan, cruelty-free ingredients, our fragrances bridge the gap between the clean and luxury categories, using the highest eau de parfum concentrations housed in sculptural, eye-catching bottles. You shouldn't have to choose between being luxe and refined, or clean and vegan-now, you don't have to.
  • Confessions Of A Rebel: We were born in 2018, holding fast to the idea that the fragrance industry was in dire need of a change. When we looked around, all we saw was a sea of sameness: outdated archetypes of femininity and masculinity paired with unrelatable images of luxury that we had no say in. In truth, we are complex in ways that cannot be contained in the traditional heteronormative stereotypes, existing beyond the binary with raw, unfiltered voices that deserve to be heard.
  • Goodhabit: Enriched with a blend of essential oils, Goodhabit's clean, vegan, cruelty-free fragrances act as bottled intentions you set free with each mist. Our scents are designed to help you align with the good habits you're building, while working to enhance and boost your mood. Inhale, exhale, and let the good energy flow through you.
  • Sanctuary: Created for those who care about the fate of our planets, Sanctuary offers fragrance for a better future. Our clean, community-driven fragrances are inspired by endangered species and their habitats, each aimed at raising money and awareness for the preservation of their namesake.
  • Drift: Drift began as an alternative to all of the tacky air care products on the market. Our products are designed to blend in, with amazing scents that stand out. We take pride in our fragrances, keeping them free from the traditional chemicals used in the fragrance industry. We are always phthalate and paraben free. We never skimp on quality of our scents or the products that deliver them. Our design ethos is simple but effective. We love our community, those who won't settle for ordinary, and we want to deliver a best in class experience.

Scentbird is committed to bringing individuals from different backgrounds and perspectives into the Nest. We strive to uphold an inclusive environment where individuals of all different backgrounds, ages, colors, ethnicities, gender, or gender identities, genetics, physical or mental abilities, protected veteran status, race, religious or sexual orientation, thrive. We respect the laws enforced by the EEOC and are dedicated internally to going above and beyond in fostering diversity. Come as you are - we're excited to meet you.
