What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a fractional position?

To thrive as a Fractional professional (such as a Fractional CFO, CMO, or CTO), you need extensive experience and expertise in your functional area, usually demonstrated through years of leadership and advanced degrees or certifications. Familiarity with collaboration tools like Slack and Zoom, project management software, and specialized systems (e.g., ERP for finance, CRM for marketing) is crucial. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and the ability to quickly integrate with diverse teams help Fractionals stand out. These capabilities ensure that Fractional professionals can deliver high-impact results in dynamic, short-term engagements and leadership scenarios.

What is a fractional?

A Fractional job is a professional role in which an expert provides part-time, high-level strategic or operational support to multiple companies instead of working full-time for a single employer. Fractional professionals typically work in leadership or specialized roles such as CFO, CMO, or CTO, offering their expertise to businesses that need experienced guidance but do not require or cannot afford a full-time executive. This model allows companies to access top-tier talent while maintaining flexibility and cost efficiency.

What does a typical work schedule look like for a fractional professional?

Fractional professionals usually work on a part-time or project basis with one or more organizations, often splitting their week between several clients. The schedule can be highly flexible, with work hours tailored to both the needs of the business and the professional’s availability, although some roles may require attending critical meetings or being available during specific business hours. This flexibility allows Fractional experts to maintain a healthy work-life balance, but it also requires strong time management. Candidates should be prepared to collaborate remotely with teams and quickly adapt to different business cultures and priorities.

$90K - $120K/yr

Full-time

Job description

Position Description:
Mountain West Financial is hiring a senior IT and Security Engineer to be the technology anchor in our Draper office. You will own on-site IT and endpoint engineering and help run our security and compliance program day to day, working directly with our CTO and fractional CISO.
As a growing mortgage lender, our fastest-growing risk is on the security and compliance side, and we want a strong engineer in the building who can execute it, backed by our remote support team and fractional security leadership.

What you'll do
- Own on-site IT and endpoint engineering: device deployment and repair across Windows and Mac, MDM (Intune, and Iru Endpoint), new-hire onboarding, M365 and Entra administration, and escalations from the remote team
- Execute and help mature our security program alongside the CTO and fractional CISO: Microsoft 365 and Entra hardening, Intune compliance policies, identity and access (Entra, conditional access, MFA), and GLBA and audit readiness
- Be the on-site technology partner to leadership: secure, reliable, high-availability support for the executive team and staff
- Set direction for our IT tooling and standards, and raise concerns directly when something needs to change
- Coordinate with the remote support team so routine tickets stay off your plate

What you bring
- 8 or more years in IT with strong endpoint and systems engineering experience
- Deep Microsoft stack: Entra, Intune, Exchange and M365, Active Directory, SCCM, and PowerShell
- Hands-on device management across Windows and Mac (Intune, Iru Endpoint, SCCM) and physical hardware setup and repair
- Identity and access management experience (Entra and conditional access; Okta a plus)
- Exposure to security and compliance in a regulated or large enterprise environment, and the drive to own it here with our fractional CISO
- Executive-grade communication and the judgment to lead decisions, not just implement
- Ability to work on-site in Draper, UT

Nice to have
- Experience in a regulated financial or lending environment; familiarity with GLBA, WISP, or similar frameworks
- Certifications: Azure Administrator Associate, CompTIA A+, Apple Certified Mac Technician, or ITIL; a security certification (Security+, SC-200) a plus
- Experience administering enterprise AI tools (Claude)
