Fractional Project information

What is a fractional project?

A Fractional Project job refers to a role where a professional is hired on a part-time, contract, or temporary basis to manage specific projects without being a full-time employee. This allows companies to access experienced project managers or specialists for short-term or specialized initiatives while controlling costs. Fractional project professionals often work with multiple clients at once, bringing broad industry expertise and flexibility.

How does working as a fractional project manager differ from a full-time project management position?

As a Fractional Project Manager, you typically serve multiple clients or departments on a part-time or contract basis rather than working full-time for a single employer. This means you'll need to adapt quickly to different organizational cultures and processes, manage priorities across projects, and ensure effective communication with diverse stakeholders. The role often offers more flexibility and autonomy, which can be attractive to experienced project managers seeking variety and work-life balance. However, it can also require strong self-management skills and the ability to handle competing deadlines. Being proactive and organized is key to thriving in this dynamic work structure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the fractional project position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Fractional Project Manager, you need strong project management expertise, experience overseeing multiple initiatives, and a background in your industry of focus. Familiarity with tools like Asana, Trello, Microsoft Project, and relevant project management certifications (such as PMP or Agile) is commonly required. Excellent communication, time management, and the ability to quickly integrate into different teams make candidates stand out. These skills are essential for delivering results, maintaining stakeholder alignment, and driving projects forward in a part-time or consultant capacity.

Job description

Do you prefer a job where you can make an impact and have a great deal of autonomy? Would you like to work with a variety of clients? Are you both an experienced CFO and good at relationships? Please read on...

THE OPPORTUNITY

At Warren Whitney, you won't simply be someone else's CFO; you'll become the trusted advisor for financial matters to multiple successful business owners. You'll tackle a variety of strategic challenges, work alongside experienced professionals in finance, HR, strategy, and executive search, and help companies grow, improve performance, and prepare for the future. If you enjoy solving business problems, building relationships, and making a measurable difference, you'll find a career that's both intellectually stimulating and professionally rewarding.

Warren Whitney offers the best of both worlds: the autonomy to shape your own client portfolio with the support, infrastructure, and benefits of an established firm.

POSITION OVERVIEW

As Chief Financial Officer (CFO), you will serve clients in fractional, interim, and project-based roles. You will provide strategic leadership, financial planning and analysis, risk management, and financial decision support. The CFO is a full-time role, eligible for benefits.

Key responsibilities, in support of your clients, will include:

Financial Planning and Analysis – Including the development and implementation of financial strategies and plans that support the organization's growth and profitability.

Cash Flow Management and Cost Management – Forecasting and analysis, along with implementation of strategies to optimize cash management, while minimizing risk.

Financial Decision Support - Partner with department leaders to provide financial guidance and support for decision-making.

Relationship Management - Build and maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders, such as banks, auditors, and regulatory authorities.

Qualifications

We understand that each person brings a unique set of skills. The following qualifications are indicative of the backgrounds we seek:

  • Minimum of 15 years of progressive finance experience, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role. Experience with non-profit organizations or mid-sized businesses is a plus.
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field. MBA and/or CPA preferred. Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial regulations, and reporting requirements.
  • Experience that includes both public accounting and privately held or nonprofit employment.
  • Expertise in planning, analysis, forecasting, and reporting. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data to support informed decision making.
  • Ability to think strategically and develop financial strategies that support overall business goals and objectives while mitigating risk.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with leaders and stakeholders across an organization.

COMPENSATION

Compensation is based on client billing. Current Warren Whitney professionals who serve as CFOs range in compensation from $160,000 to $240,000. The firm offers a competitive benefits package to full-time employees.

WHY WARREN WHITNEY?

Warren Whitney is a management consulting firm based in Richmond, Virginia, with almost 40 years of experience helping privately held businesses and nonprofit organizations thrive.

At Warren Whitney, we do things a little differently, and we think that's what makes this role stand out. As a fractional CFO on our team, you'll have the chance to shape your own client portfolio, much like an independent consultant would. But unlike going it alone, you'll be backed by the infrastructure, benefits, and support of an established firm.

Our model offers the best of both worlds:

  • Flexibility - Work remotely, on-site, or a mix of both, depending on each client's needs and your preferences. Engagements vary in time commitment and complexity, and you will have a say in the right match for your skills and interests.
  • High Variety of Work To Choose From - Our professionals engage with a wide range of industries, including construction, manufacturing, professional services, and not-for-profits. This exposure keeps the work interesting, challenges you to grow, and helps build a well-rounded skill set.
  • Autonomy with Support - You'll drive your own success while we handle the administrative lift - from sales and marketing to billing, collections, and healthcare benefits. And while we trust our team to own their work, you'll always have access to a collaborative and supportive group of peers, managers, and partners who've got your back.
  • Client-First Mentality - We're not a "check-the-box" firm. We prioritize long-term relationships and empower you to recommend what's truly best for the client, even when it's not the easy answer.
  • Opportunity to Lead - You'll have the chance to make a real impact, guiding business leaders and shaping strategic decisions. And as you grow, so does your career; this role is designed to open the door to greater autonomy and future leadership as a Director.
  • No Grind Culture - We believe meaningful, intellectually engaging work doesn't have to come at the cost of balance. Our engagements are dynamic, impactful, and built for professionals who want to do work that matters without burning out.

This is more than a job. It's a chance to work the way you want, on work that matters, with a team that's committed to your success.
