What is a Fractional Creative?

A Fractional Creative is a seasoned creative professional—such as a designer, art director, or brand strategist—who works with companies on a part-time, contract, or project basis. Instead of hiring a full-time creative leader, businesses can bring in a Fractional Creative to provide strategic guidance, creative direction, and hands-on work for specific projects or during periods of transition. This flexible arrangement helps organizations access high-level creative expertise without the commitment and cost of a full-time hire. Fractional Creatives often work with startups, growing businesses, or companies that need fresh creative perspectives on demand.

How does a Fractional Creative typically integrate with existing in-house teams and processes?

A Fractional Creative usually works as an embedded partner, collaborating closely with in-house marketing, design, and product teams while bringing an outsider’s perspective. This role often involves adapting quickly to the company’s workflow, understanding brand guidelines, and providing strategic creative direction on a part-time or project basis. Communication and flexibility are key, as they may juggle multiple clients or projects and must align their schedules with team meetings, feedback sessions, and deadlines. Successful Fractional Creatives are adept at building trust and fostering collaboration, ensuring their creative input aligns seamlessly with the team's ongoing initiatives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fractional Creative, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fractional Creative, you need a robust portfolio demonstrating expertise in design, branding, and creative strategy, often supported by a degree in design or communications. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and project management systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and self-management are crucial soft skills for collaborating with diverse clients and juggling multiple projects. These skills ensure the delivery of impactful creative solutions and maintain strong client relationships in a flexible, project-based work environment.

Job description

About Public Servants
We're public servants.
We partner with governments, nonprofits, and mission-driven organizations to strengthen how public services are designed, communicated, and delivered. Our work blends strategy, creative craft, and care-centered leadership to build systems that are more effective, equitable, and grounded in real human needs. We often work at the intersection of design, policy, and operations-supporting both delivery and the systems that make good work possible.
As a small, remote-first firm, we work collaboratively and intentionally-bringing together people with diverse expertise to shape meaningful, high-impact work in the public interest.
About this opportunity
This is not a posting for a specific open role.
We're building a network of designers and collaborators with experience in service and experience design who may be interested in working with Public Servants on future projects, proposals, or advisory efforts.
Our work is project-based and varies in scope. Opportunities may include short-term contracts, fractional support, advisory roles, or-when aligned-longer-term engagements. Some collaborators join us to support specific client work, while others contribute to shaping proposals or helping define new opportunities.
By submitting your information, you're expressing interest in being considered for future collaboration. While we may not have an immediate opportunity, we review submissions on a rolling basis and reach out when there's alignment with upcoming work.

  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment
  • Comfort discussing ideas, sharing work, and engaging in thoughtful feedback
  • Authorized to work in and based in the United States
