A Fractional Chief is an experienced executive who works with an organization on a part-time, contract, or interim basis, typically in a C-level role such as Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), or Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Job description

About McCracken Alliance

McCracken Alliance partners with CEOs, owners, boards, and investors to elevate the Office of the CFO—bringing hands-on strategic finance leadership to growth, transition, and special project environments. We’re building an evergreen bench of experienced Fractional and Interim CFOs with deep exposure to SaaS, healthcare services, biotech/life sciences, medical device/medtech, manufacturing, and professional services across the North East region.

What you’ll do

You will step in as the senior finance leader for clients who need a true strategic partner—often in PE-backed, VC-backed, founder-led, or operationally complex environments.

  • Serve as a strategic partner to CEOs/owners and leadership teams on growth, profitability, and capital allocation.
  • Lead cash flow strategy, runway planning (where relevant), working capital optimization, and margin/profitability initiatives.
  • Build and improve forecasting, budgeting, and KPI dashboards that drive decisions—not just reports.
  • Deliver board-/lender-/investor-ready reporting and decision support.
  • Support diligence readiness, recapitalizations, financings, and M&A / transaction work as needed.
  • Strengthen finance operations (close cadence, controls, systems/process improvements).
  • Partner with Controllers and finance teams to build durable processes and performance beyond the engagement.

Sector-specific examples you may own (depending on client):

  • Healthcare: service line/site profitability, payer mix & reimbursement analytics, labor productivity, RCM/denials visibility, growth strategy support.
  • Biotech/Life Sciences: runway & burn management, program/portfolio spend visibility, grant or collaboration accounting support, investor reporting.
  • Medical Device/MedTech: COGS and gross margin improvement, inventory visibility, demand planning inputs, ops KPI alignment, scaling finance for growth.
  • Professional Services: utilization and realization metrics, project margin improvement, delivery/finance alignment, revenue recognition support, pricing and packaging analytics.

Scope, cadence, and on-site expectations vary by client and engagement.

Who you are

This network is designed for senior finance leaders who operate at the CFO level and want to structure their careers around fractional/interim work.

  • 8+ years of progressive finance experience with senior leadership responsibility.
  • Experience as CFO / VP Finance / Head of Finance (or equivalent).
  • Strong modeling/FP&A capabilities; able to translate data into decisions for non-finance stakeholders.
  • Solid accounting fluency (GAAP) and a practical, controls-oriented mindset.
  • Executive presence; clear, concise communicator with operators and boards/lenders/investors.
  • Healthcare: provider/services finance, multi-site operations, RCM familiarity, payer/reimbursement drivers, labor economics, compliance-minded operations.
  • Biotech/Life Sciences: VC/PE environments, budget ownership in R&D-heavy orgs, cash discipline, runway planning, readiness for scaling.
  • Medical Device/MedTech: product economics, inventory/COGS, cost accounting fundamentals, operational KPI leadership, scaling processes.
  • Professional Services: project economics, utilization/realization, delivery operations partnership, pricing/margin work.

Bonus points if you have experience with fundraising or M&A, leading a turnaround, implementing systems like ERP or BI/FP&A tools, or holding a CPA or MBA. Familiarity with the relevant regulatory landscape is also a big plus.

Why McCracken Alliance’s network is different

  • No long-term commitment required—keep freedom to pursue other opportunities.
  • Flexible work aligned to your availability, preferred cadence, and strengths.
  • Variety of clients and engagement types (discrete projects to ongoing fractional seats).
  • Central team support that scopes and frames engagements so you can focus on impact.

This is not a single role; it’s an ongoing relationship with McCracken Alliance for consideration of current and future Fractional/Interim CFO engagements.

Company Description
