Is 13F a combat job?

The 13F Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) is a Forward Observer role in the Army, primarily responsible for calling in artillery and missile strikes. It is considered a combat support position, requiring training in weapons, communication, and battlefield tactics. While not front-line infantry, 13Fs operate in combat zones and are integral to combat operations.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Forward Observer in the field?

Forward Observers are responsible for locating and identifying targets, calculating coordinates, and communicating precise targeting data to artillery and mortar units. Their days often involve operating in various terrains, using advanced communication and navigation tools, and closely coordinating with infantry and command teams. Regular duties may include conducting reconnaissance, maintaining situational awareness, and adapting plans based on rapidly changing conditions. This role requires a high degree of vigilance and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a tactical team. Forward Observers play a vital role in ensuring accurate and timely fire support, making their contributions critical to mission success.

What is the forward observations job?

A forward observer is a military or tactical role responsible for directing artillery, mortar, or missile fire onto targets identified in the field. They gather target information, communicate with fire support units, and use tools like radios and laser rangefinders to ensure accurate targeting. The job requires strong communication skills, situational awareness, and often involves working in combat or training environments.

Do forward observers work alone?

Forward observers typically work as part of a team, coordinating with artillery units and other military personnel to relay target information accurately. While they may operate independently in the field, effective communication and teamwork are essential for mission success and safety.

Is a forward observer a JTAC?

A forward observer is a military role responsible for directing artillery or mortar fire onto targets, often using radios and targeting data. A Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) is a specialized role that coordinates close air support and airstrikes, often working closely with forward observers. While both roles collaborate in combat, they have distinct responsibilities and training requirements.

What is a Forward Observer job?

A Forward Observer (FO) is a military specialist responsible for directing artillery and mortar fire onto enemy targets. They work with ground units and use maps, GPS, and laser rangefinders to determine target locations and communicate precise coordinates to fire support teams. FOs play a critical role in ensuring accuracy and effectiveness while minimizing collateral damage. Their job requires strong attention to detail, quick decision-making, and the ability to operate in high-pressure combat environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Forward Observer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Forward Observer, you need strong mathematical skills, situational awareness, and the ability to learn military tactics, typically obtained through specialized military training and completion of observer certification courses. Familiarity with advanced communication equipment, GPS devices, and fire direction systems is essential for accurately relaying target information. Sharp decision-making, attention to detail, and effective teamwork under pressure are valuable soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure precise and timely support for field operations, directly impacting mission success and the safety of team members.

Forward Deployed Engineer

Claim Health

New York, NY โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 29 days ago

Job description

About Claim Health
Claim Health is the AI Revenue Platform for Post-Acute Care. Post-acute care is one of the largest and fastest-growing sectors in healthcare, yet the operational infrastructure powering it is fragmented, manual, and reactive. Providers operate across disconnected systems, human-heavy workflows, and high-stakes operational processes that directly impact patient access and financial performance.
Claim Health is building the adaptive operational layer for post-acute care - a platform that unifies data, automates execution, and enables intelligent coordination across revenue-critical workflows.
We work directly inside some of the most operationally complex healthcare organizations in the country, helping them modernize the systems that power care delivery.
The Role
We're looking for a Forward Deployed Engineer to operate at the intersection of engineering, product, and customer operations.
This is not traditional solutions engineering or implementation consulting.
You'll work directly with customers to understand how real operational systems break, then build production-grade software that solves those problems at the root. Half of your job is deeply technical execution across the stack. The other half is embedding with customers, translating operational complexity into scalable product systems.
You will shape both:
  • How Claim Health's platform evolves
  • How entire product lines are defined and brought to market

Forward Deployed Engineers at Claim Health are builders first. You will write production code, own deployments, design workflows, and create new abstractions that become core parts of the platform.
You'll spend time inside real healthcare operations (intake teams, billing workflows, authorization queues, reconciliation processes) then turn that operational reality into software.
This role is ideal for someone who wants maximum ownership, customer proximity, and the opportunity to define entirely new categories of workflow automation.
What your day will look like
Build Production Systems
  • Ship full-stack product capabilities directly into production
  • Build workflow orchestration systems, internal tooling, and customer-facing interfaces
  • Design resilient systems that coordinate complex operational processes
  • Work across frontend, backend, infra, integrations, and AI systems
Embed Directly with Customers
  • Work closely with operators, billing teams, executives, and frontline staff
  • Observe operational workflows firsthand and identify systemic bottlenecks
  • Lead implementations and deployments within large healthcare organizations
  • Translate ambiguous customer pain points into scalable product primitives
Shape Product Direction
  • Define entirely new product lines from customer insight and operational patterns
  • Create abstractions that generalize across fragmented healthcare systems
  • Influence roadmap prioritization through direct field exposure
  • Partner with engineering and GTM to rapidly iterate on high-leverage workflows
Own Outcomes End-to-End
  • Diagnose failures in messy real-world environments
  • Build automation that removes operational burden at scale
  • Ensure systems are observable, reliable, and correct under real constraints
  • Operate with urgency while maintaining high engineering standards
How Claim Health Engineering Works
We believe the best engineers are deeply connected to the problems they solve.
At Claim Health:
  • Engineers talk directly to customers
  • Product direction emerges from operational reality
  • We optimize for speed, ownership, and leverage
  • We care deeply about correctness and reliability
  • We build systems, not demos
  • We prioritize durable abstractions over temporary fixes

There is no strict separation between engineering, product, implementation, or strategy.
The people building the platform are the same people defining how it evolves.
What We're Looking For
We care more about slope, ownership, and systems thinking than specific technologies.
You likely have:
  • Strong full-stack engineering fundamentals
  • Comfort operating across frontend, backend, infrastructure, and data systems
  • Experience working directly with customers or operational stakeholders
  • The ability to move fluidly between technical depth and business context

You thrive if you:
  • Enjoy ambiguous, high-ownership environments
  • Like understanding how real organizations operate
  • Can deconstruct operational chaos into software systems
  • Care deeply about reliability, edge cases, and product quality
  • Prefer solving root problems over patching symptoms
  • Want to shape products, not just execute tickets
  • Are energized by customer interaction rather than isolated implementation work

Bonus (Not Required)
  • Experience with workflow orchestration systems
  • Background in AI agents, automation, or integration platforms
  • Experience deploying AI-powered systems in production
  • Exposure to healthcare, fintech, logistics, or other operationally complex industries
  • Experience working in highly customer-embedded engineering roles
Why Join Claim Health
Build the Operating Layer for a Massive Industry
Healthcare operations are still largely manual. We're building the infrastructure layer that modernizes how post-acute care organizations operate.
High Ownership
You will directly influence product direction, architecture, and company trajectory from an early stage.
Real Problems, Real Stakes
The systems we build affect revenue cycles, operational efficiency, and ultimately patient access to care.
Tight Feedback Loops
You'll work directly with end users and see the impact of your work immediately.
Elite Team, Low Ego
We value intellectual honesty, speed, craftsmanship, and people who care deeply about building.
Fast Pace, High Leverage
Small team. Extremely high ownership. Very little bureaucracy.
Fun
We take the work seriously, not ourselves. One of the most important things we screen for is whether we genuinely enjoy working with you.
