Job description

Position Summary

The Geotechnical Engineering Technician I works collaboratively with other JDS employees in leading the Company toward its long-term vision of being the premier provider of engineering, design, and construction material testing in the Southeast. An employee in this class will accurately test soils and perform 3rd party inspections following JDS directives and standards, and accurately record test results. The Geotechnical Engineering Technician I is expected to act as an ambassador for the JDS brand.


Primary Responsibilities and Expectations


Soils & 3rd Party Inspections

  • Makes site visits and communicates with clients.
  • Basic plan reading and interpretation skills

  • Utilizes equipment to mechanically test the soil.
  • Auger and test in-place soil for compaction, density, and moisture content using a variety of methods.

  • Locating and plotting tests on project data sheets

  • Determining soil types and bearing capacities

  • Manage documentation of soil testing, including all analyses and necessary reports.

  • Ability to search the web and other resources for solutions.

  • Obtain other required certifications as dictated by JDS.

  • The employee is expected to work on assigned training or cross-training with other departments/positions anytime the employee has not reached 40 hrs/wk due to weather or workload.


Qualifications


Education: High School Diploma.


Experience: Previous soil testing or construction experience is desired, but not required.


Skills:


  • Knowledge of soil classification

  • Knowledge of methods for calibrating soil-related field equipment

  • Adheres to safety procedures at the project site

  • Working knowledge of various types of construction equipment

  • Needs to be comfortable using MS Office Word & Excel

  • Valid driver’s license and strong driving record

  • Good oral and written communication skills

  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills with close attention to detail

  • Probe Rod

  • Hammer Drill/Auger
