As of Jul 15, 2026, the average yearly pay for fortran in the United States is $112,254.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $98,500.00 and $125,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Is Fortran still in demand?

Fortran remains in demand primarily in scientific, engineering, and high-performance computing fields where legacy code and numerical computation are critical. Jobs requiring Fortran often involve maintaining or developing scientific simulations, with knowledge of parallel programming and numerical methods being advantageous.

What jobs use Fortran?

Jobs that use Fortran are typically found in scientific research, engineering, and high-performance computing fields. These roles often involve developing and maintaining numerical simulations, modeling, and data analysis in industries such as aerospace, defense, energy, and academia. Proficiency in Fortran, along with knowledge of scientific libraries and parallel computing, is often required for these positions.

What is a Fortran job?

A Fortran job typically involves programming, maintaining, and optimizing software written in Fortran, a high-performance computing language used in scientific computing, engineering, and numerical analysis. Professionals working in Fortran may develop simulations, data models, or computational algorithms for fields like meteorology, physics, and finance. These roles often require expertise in legacy code, debugging, and performance optimization on modern computing architectures.

Is Fortran a dead language?

Fortran is still used in scientific and high-performance computing environments, especially for numerical and engineering applications. While its popularity has declined compared to modern languages, legacy codebases and specialized fields continue to rely on Fortran, and job opportunities may exist for maintaining or updating such systems.

How much does a Fortran programmer make?

The salary of a Fortran programmer varies based on experience, location, and industry, but typically ranges from $70,000 to $120,000 annually in the United States. Skilled programmers with expertise in scientific computing, legacy systems, or high-performance computing may earn higher salaries, especially with certifications or advanced degrees.

What types of projects do Fortran Developers typically work on, and what is a typical work environment like?

Fortran Developers often work on projects in scientific research, engineering simulations, numerical analysis, and high-performance computing—such as climate modeling, physics simulations, or computational fluid dynamics. The work environment may range from academic research labs and government agencies to private sector industries like aerospace or energy. Typically, you’ll collaborate with scientists, engineers, and other developers to maintain and enhance complex software systems. Many positions encourage teamwork and ongoing learning, offering opportunities to modernize legacy code and contribute to cutting-edge computational solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Fortran position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fortran Developer, you need strong proficiency in Fortran programming, scientific computing concepts, and a relevant degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering, or a related field. Experience with legacy codebases, version control systems like Git, and familiarity with parallel computing frameworks are commonly required. Problem-solving skills, analytical thinking, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for collaborating with diverse technical teams. These abilities ensure you can maintain and update high-performance scientific applications, adapt to evolving requirements, and work productively within multidisciplinary environments.

We provide support in the areas of programmatic and systems engineering, engineering and scientific analysis, and operational systems support for Navy SSP's strategic reentry systems. We utilize both COTS and in-house developed software to deliver analysis results and software models of reentry systems and weapons effects to Navy SSP.
The mechanical and aerospace engineer level III will be responsible for supporting the maintenance and development of our legacy in-house developed software tools and providing technical analysis of reentry system performance in hostile and normal reentry environments. This analysis can include modeling the environments, and analyzing complex materials and structures and dynamic response of structures subjected to hypersonic aerodynamic loads and system responses to thermal and shock environments.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Work in a team environment to plan and accomplish project goals and objectives
  • Development and maintenance of in-house developed software programs and tools (FORTRAN, C++, Python)
  • Support vehicle performance evaluations in hostile and atmospheric reentry environments with advanced computer modeling techniques
  • Analyze, interpret, and assess simulation results
  • Publish summary reports documenting results
  • Write plans, reports, and presentations
  • Present results to DoD customer and external reviewers
