Job description

Job Title: Pharmacist – Compounding Specialist
Job Description

This role focuses on advanced pharmaceutical compounding, formulation development, and direct patient support in a specialized pharmacy setting. You will compound a wide range of sterile and non-sterile preparations, develop and maintain formulations and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and build strong relationships with prescribers’ offices to support individualized medication therapies.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the skills necessary to effectively compound prescriptions across a broad range of dosage forms.
  • Develop, write, and update formulations and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for compounded medications.
  • Answer questions and provide clear information to patients and caregivers about compound ingredients, dosage, storage, use of medications, potential interactions, and other aspects of compounded therapies.
  • Inform patients about the readiness of compounded medications, mailing policies and procedures, and billing and insurance processes.
  • Receive oral, electronic, or written prescriptions, orders, and refill requests, verifying that all information is complete, accurate, and compliant with regulations.
  • Mix pharmaceutical preparations, accurately fill prescriptions for dispensing, and ensure all containers are labeled correctly and completely.
  • Establish and maintain detailed patient profiles and records, accurately enter prescriptions, and bill insurance plans appropriately.
  • Assist the pharmacy team in delivering high-quality customer service to patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers.
  • Support inventory management by monitoring and maintaining adequate stock of labels, medications, compounding ingredients, and supplies.
  • Clean and maintain equipment, work areas, and glassware in accordance with SOPs and quality standards.
  • Maintain proper storage conditions and security for medications, ingredients, and finished compounded products.
  • Compound a variety of advanced preparations, including injections and infusions, irrigations for internal body cavities, ophthalmic dosage forms, aqueous preparations for pulmonary inhalation, baths and soaks for live organs and tissues, and implants.
  • Follow established SOPs consistently, assist in the development and refinement of new SOPs, and perform accurate mathematical calculations for formulations and dosing.
  • Communicate effectively with prescribers and other healthcare professionals, and relay appropriate information to designated staff to ensure proper compounding of medications.
  • Develop and maintain a strong understanding of key compounding topics, including infusions, nutritional support, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), veterinary medicine, pain management, and mitochondrial disorders.
  • Attend external professional meetings and represent the pharmacy professionally while engaging with patients, staff, and other stakeholders.
Essential Skills
  • BS in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an accredited school of pharmacy.
  • Current Indiana Pharmacist license in good standing.
  • At least 3 years of pharmacy compounding experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in sterile compounding and aseptic technique.
  • Strong knowledge of pharmaceutical formulations, dosage forms, and drug formulation principles.
  • Proficiency in pharmacy compounding practices and standards.
  • Ability to accurately receive, interpret, and process oral, electronic, and written prescriptions and refill requests.
  • Competence in mathematical calculations related to compounding, dosing, and formulations.
  • Experience maintaining patient profiles, prescription records, and insurance billing information with high accuracy.
  • Solid understanding of clinical pharmacology as it relates to compounded medications.
  • Strong customer service skills when interacting with patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to follow and implement SOPs and regulatory requirements in a compounding pharmacy environment.
  • Commitment to completing continuing education units (CEUs) required to maintain state licensure, including CEUs in compounding (required or preferred as specified by state guidelines).
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience working in a compounding pharmacy or specialized sterile compounding environment.
  • Familiarity with pharmacy certification programs and National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) standards.
  • Knowledge of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), nutritional support, veterinary compounding, pain management, and mitochondrial disorder therapies.
  • Experience with sterile injections, infusions, ophthalmic preparations, inhalation therapies, and implants.
  • Comfort with pharmacy software systems for prescription entry, patient profiles, and insurance billing.
  • Attention to detail in labeling, documentation, and record-keeping.
  • Ability to communicate complex medication information in a clear, empathetic, and patient-friendly manner.
  • Interest in ongoing professional development, including attending external professional meetings and staying current with compounding best practices.

Work Environment

This position operates in a professional compounding pharmacy environment with a primary focus on sterile and non-sterile preparations. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., providing a consistent daytime workweek. You will work with specialized compounding equipment, sterile compounding tools, and laboratory glassware, following strict SOPs for cleaning, maintenance, and aseptic technique. The setting emphasizes accuracy, safety, and regulatory compliance, with controlled storage conditions for medications, ingredients, and finished compounds. The workplace culture supports professional growth, including attendance at external professional meetings and ongoing education.
